The central government has approved the construction of 3.8 lakh new permanent houses in Assam under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), representing a total investment of nearly Rs 5,000 crore. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma finalized the housing deal during a meeting on Tuesday in New Delhi with Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who formally presented the sanctioned approval documents to the state leadership.
Assistance for Flood-Affected Families and Tea Garden Regions
During their high-level discussions, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan assured the Assam Chief Minister that the Centre will allocate supplementary PMAY housing aid specifically for families devastated by the state's recent severe floods. This dedicated funding is intended to accelerate home reconstruction and quickly restore shelter for displaced citizens. Furthermore, the central government pledged targeted housing support for communities residing in Assam's extensive tea garden belts, addressing essential shelter requirements for plantation workers.
Rs 139 Crore Allocation for Agricultural Development
In addition to the housing expansion, Chief Minister Sarma received a formal sanction letter allocating Rs 139 crore to Assam under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY). These agricultural grants are earmarked to strengthen state farming investments, upgrade rural infrastructure, and promote eco-friendly, sustainable farming methods across districts. Expressing gratitude on behalf of the people of Assam, Sarma wrote on X appreciating the Union Minister for his prompt decisions and continuous backing during disaster recovery operations.
