Shillong: Assam officials were prevented from carrying out a household enumeration in Mukroh on Monday after residents of the disputed village blocked the exercise. The residents insisted that the area comes under Meghalaya’s jurisdiction and not under Assam.
Residents challenge the enumeration
Officials acting for the Assam government were collecting demographic details from households in the village. The work required information from individual homes rather than a general visit to the area. The settlement is known as Mukroh in Meghalaya and as Mokru in Assam.
Members of the local Khasi community objected to the officials’ presence and declined to cooperate with the enumeration. Their refusal stopped the exercise from proceeding. They maintained that Mukroh is outside the administrative control of both Assam and the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC).
Threat allegation is unconfirmed
An enumerator was allegedly threatened with physical harm during the confrontation. No independent confirmation was available, so the allegation remains unconfirmed.
Meghalaya assistance is cited
Residents described a years-long administrative relationship with Meghalaya and said state assistance has reached them during that period. Among the support they highlighted was housing assistance delivered under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). They said no comparable help had come from Assam. For the community, these benefits support its claim of an administrative connection with Meghalaya.
Long-running boundary dispute resurfaces
The community’s position is that it does not fall under the KAAC or Assam’s administration, and that view drove the opposition to the household data collection. The episode puts Mukroh’s disputed status back in public focus. The village remains embedded in the broader boundary disagreement between Assam and Meghalaya that has persisted for years.
