Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inspected the preparations at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Sunday for the grand concluding ceremony marking the year-long centenary celebrations of legendary musician and Bharat Ratna recipient Dr Bhupen Hazarika. The upcoming closing event is meticulously planned as a profound tribute to Hazarika’s monumental contributions to Indian music, cinema, and literature, with the Assam government aiming to commemorate his rich legacy through a magnificent programme at this premier national-level venue.
Reviewing Facilities at Bharat Mandapam
Following his visit to Bharat Mandapam, Sarma took to X to share details of the inspection, noting that comprehensive arrangements are being put in place to ensure an exceptionally memorable tribute to the revered artiste, who is widely and affectionately known as 'Sudhakantha'. He posted that he visited the venue earlier in the day to review all the facilities and preparations for the grand closing ceremony, adding that an unforgettable tribute befitting the true legacy of Sudhakantha is currently being curated. The post also included the hashtag #BhupenDaAt100 to highlight the milestone.
Celebrating a Century of Legacy
The ongoing centenary celebrations officially mark one hundred years since Hazarika was born on September 8, 1926, in Assam. His timeless music, influential films, and remarkable literary works earned him widespread recognition and deep reverence across the entire country, while his lyrical compositions frequently explored enduring themes of humanity, social justice, equality, and communal harmony. Drawing profound inspiration from the rich cultural traditions and lived experiences of the Northeast, Hazarika played a pivotal role in introducing the region’s distinctive music and compelling stories to a much wider audience nationwide.
National Honours and Cultural Heritage
In recognition of his immense cultural impact, he was posthumously conferred with the Bharat Ratna, which stands as the country’s highest civilian honour, in the year 2019. His long list of other major national honours also included the prestigious Padma Vibhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The forthcoming programme at Bharat Mandapam is anticipated to officially bring the extensive centenary celebrations to a fitting close, with various renowned artistes, prominent cultural figures, and distinguished dignitaries likely to participate in honouring the remarkable life and work of the celebrated musician and filmmaker. Throughout the centenary year, the Assam government has actively worked to highlight Hazarika's immense contribution to India's shared cultural heritage and successfully promoted his timeless works among younger generations.
