Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and legendary sporting icon Sunil Manohar Gavaskar formally launched the inaugural Guwahati International Marathon on Thursday, scheduling the grand race for February 7, 2027. This milestone launch aims to place Assam prominently on the national and global sporting maps, welcoming elite athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and amateur runners from across India and overseas.
Partnerships and Sponsorship Structure
Promoted by PMG Sports LLP, the landmark event anticipates around 12,000 participants from domestic and international locations. The Assam Tourism Development Corporation is participating as the State Sponsor to bolster sports tourism in the region, while TOPCEM Cement, a brand owned by Meghalaya Cements Ltd., has boarded the initiative as an Associate Sponsor.
Prize Purse and Race Categories
The competition boasts a total prize purse of Rs 1.25 crore, establishing it as one of the major prize-money road racing events nationwide. Designed to combine elite competition with mass community involvement, the event features five distinct race categories including the full marathon measuring 42.195 km, the half marathon at 21.097 km, a 10-km run, a 5-km run, and a 1.5-km run.
Key Personalities and Course Details
Highlighting the launch event, Chief Minister Sarma received Bib #1 directly from Sunil Gavaskar, marking a strong administrative and personal endorsement. Star badminton champion P.V. Sindhu has been appointed as the event brand ambassador. The race route will start and finish at the historic Judges Field in Guwahati, weaving its way past Gauhati University, the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu, and IIT Guwahati.

The technical rigor of the course is backed by World Athletics Grade A Certified Road Race Course Measurer Kim Vivian from Australia. Additionally, Richard Hunter from the UK takes charge as race director, Ian Ladbrooke acts as the international elite athlete coordinator, and former Asian Marathon Champion Sunita Godara serves as the India Elite Athlete Coordinator.
