Efforts to bring the world-renowned river island of Majuli onto India's aviation map have gathered momentum following a preliminary feasibility inspection by technical experts. A dedicated team from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has visited Assam's Majuli to explore potential sites for a proposed airport project aimed at significantly enhancing regional air infrastructure.
Inspection Areas and Site Assessment
The six-member expert team from the AAI carried out field inspections across multiple locations on the river island to identify suitable plots for constructing the facility. The evaluation covered a broad stretch of land extending from Jengraimukh to Kamalabari Darbar Chapori. During the visit, the inspection team closely analyzed ground conditions, topography, and the overall environmental setting of the surrounding areas.
Technical Factors and Administrative Coordination
Beyond basic land availability, the survey team evaluated several crucial logistical and technical parameters necessary for airport development. These assessments included checking existing road connectivity, site accessibility, weather conditions, and spatial feasibility required for flight operations. Majuli District Commissioner Ratul Chandra Pathak, ACS, alongside representatives from the local district administration, police department, transport authorities, and forest department, joined the AAI team throughout the exercise.

The proposed Majuli airport represents one of four new airport developments announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in February as part of a state-wide strategy to boost air connectivity. Once implemented, the airport promises to transform travel options for local residents and visitors, facilitating seamless transit across Assam and the rest of the country while giving a strong impetus to tourism and commercial activity on the island. Construction will commence following necessary administrative clearances and detailed technical reports.
