Following the death of Bir Lachit Sena leader Manas Jyoti Chetia, the Assam state administration has mandated a comprehensive magisterial probe to investigate the exact circumstances of his passing. The activist was discovered lying gravely wounded near a roadway in the Bihubar region of Sivasagar district on August 23. Despite being rushed to a medical facility for urgent care, he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, sparking widespread tension and demands for justice across the district.
High-Level Police Supervision and Forensic Investigation
In response to direct instructions from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, law enforcement agencies across Assam have significantly broadened their investigative operations. Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh confirmed that senior officers have been deployed to Bihubar to monitor the progress of the case on the ground. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Eastern Range KJ Saikia and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) AP Headquarters Dr Robin Kumar were dispatched from Guwahati to Sivasagar alongside a specialized forensic expert team to analyze physical evidence from the location.
Local authorities at the Bihubar Police Station have formally registered Case No. 10/26 under Sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The field investigation is currently being managed under the personal supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sivasagar Papori Chetia, APS. Highlighting the administration's resolve to bring clarity to the incident, DGP Assam Police wrote on X that law enforcement is taking all necessary measures to uncover the facts behind the leader's demise.
Post-Mortem Findings and Cause of Death Details
Medical evaluations conducted during the post-mortem examination revealed that Manas Jyoti Chetia suffered multiple severe external and internal bodily injuries. Crucially, forensic examiners documented significant blunt trauma concentrated at the back of his head. After being rescued from the Birubor roadside area where he was found in a critical condition, Chetia was initially transported to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh, where medical personnel attempted to treat his wounds before he ultimately lost his life on Tuesday.
Bir Lachit Sena Allegations and Protest Warnings
Representing the regional group, Bir Lachit Sena has strongly disputed any suggestion of an accident, asserting that Chetia was targeted in a deliberate physical assault. Members of the organization have formally submitted an FIR naming 10 individuals whom they hold responsible for the violence. Additionally, organizational representatives raised claims regarding the presence of undocumented Bangladeshi Muslims in the locality, suggesting that unfamiliar persons had entered the Bihubar locality during recent regional flooding and calling on investigators to examine potential connections to the attack.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha publicly criticized the police force for failing to arrest the individuals identified in their official complaint. Chaliha alleged that instead of apprehending the perpetrators, authorities were shielding the accused party. Issuing a stern ultimatum to the state administration, Chaliha stated that the organization will launch extensive public demonstrations across the state if law enforcement fails to take immediate action and bring the named suspects to justice.
