Manufacturers have experienced an encouraging period as the middle class increasingly invests in affordable yet modern cars that offer high utility and fuel efficiency. Recent industry figures reveal that several prominent models have shattered past sales records, securing a dominant position on domestic roads and reflecting strong consumer confidence.
Tata Punch Dominates the Market
Leading the sales charts with a massive margin, the Tata Punch has secured the number one position among all vehicles in the country. The micro SUV recorded total sales of 21,320 units last month, marking an impressive near-doubling or a 99 percent year-on-year growth compared to the 10,704 units sold in August 2025. The 2026 Tata Punch comes with an initial ex-showroom price starting at ₹5.59 लाख, making it an accessible option for budget-conscious buyers seeking modern amenities.
Robust Features and Technical Specifications
The vehicle's soaring popularity stems from its rugged styling and comprehensive feature list. It features a bold design language, LED lighting elements, and a high ground clearance of 193 mm that helps navigate rough terrains effortlessly. The interior is equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen display, a digital instrument cluster, a sunroof with wireless connectivity, and a 360-degree camera system. Safety is prioritized with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating and 6 airbags standard. Buyers can choose between a 1.2L petrol engine generating 88 PS, a turbo engine producing 120 PS, and a CNG variant. The fuel efficiency stands at 19-20 km/l for the petrol variants and 27 km/kg for the CNG option.
Strong Showing by Maruti Suzuki Wagon R and Swift
Securing the second position in sales, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R recorded a total of 20,180 units sold last month, representing a stellar 39 percent annual growth compared to the 14,552 units dispatched in August 2025. Meanwhile, the Maruti Suzuki Swift claimed the third spot with 19,832 units sold, registering a robust 60 percent surge over the 12,385 units sold during the same month in the previous year.
Steady Growth for Fronx and Ertiga
Taking the fourth position, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx welcomed 18,730 new customers last month, translating to a 51 percent increase from the 12,422 units recorded in August 2025. Closely following in fifth place is the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, which registered sales of 18,516 units, maintaining a steady performance consistent with the previous year's figures.
Tata Nexon and Dzire Maintain Momentum
The Tata Nexon secured the sixth position in the market standings by retailing 18,431 units last month, marking a 32 percent year-on-year growth compared to the 14,004 units sold in August 2025. Positioned at seventh, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire sold 18,418 units last month, observing a steady 12 percent growth over its sales from the corresponding period last year.
Creta, Baleno, and Scorpio Complete the Top Ten
The Hyundai Creta claimed the eighth spot on the list, with total sales reaching 16,288 units last month, reflecting a modest growth compared to the 15,924 units recorded in August 2025. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno entered the top ten rankings driven by strong demand, garnering 15,746 customers and registering a notable 25 percent annual growth over the 12,549 units sold previously. Rounding out the top ten list at the final position is the Mahindra Scorpio, which includes both the Scorpio and Scorpio N variants, drawing 15,576 new buyers and marking a 58 percent surge compared to the 9,840 units sold in August 2025.
