Firozabad district in Uttar Pradesh has rolled out a fresh scheme to help farmers earn more from their land, offering direct financial support to those who take up fruit, flower, spice and vegetable cultivation instead of sticking only to wheat and paddy. Farmers across the state have been steadily shifting toward horticulture crops that mature faster and fetch better returns, and the state government is now backing that shift with a subsidy that goes straight toward easing the cost of setting up such farming.
What the scheme covers and who stands to gain
District horticulture officer CP Awasthi said the assistance is being rolled out under the Mukhyamantri Rajya Udyanik Vikas Yojana, a scheme meant to support farmers who want to grow fruits, flowers, spices and vegetables but hold back because of the high upfront cost involved. Once the subsidy comes through, it will lighten that financial load and let farmers earn a decent income even from a smaller plot of land. Officials believe horticulture crops mature quicker than traditional staples and command better prices in the market, which is why a direct cash incentive is seen as the most effective way to pull more farmers toward this shift. To apply, farmers must log on to the horticulture department's portal, where the subsidy fixed for each individual crop category is listed in detail.
Benefits given on a first come, first served basis
For now, the scheme has been launched only in the Araun and Shikohabad development blocks of Firozabad district. The horticulture officer made clear that the subsidy will be handed out strictly on a first come, first served basis, meaning farmers who submit their applications early will get priority. Since the rollout is currently confined to these two blocks rather than the entire district, the scope could well be widened later. Farmers keen to benefit from the scheme have therefore been advised not to delay their paperwork.
Documents farmers need to apply
Those wanting to avail the subsidy must carry their khatauni, Aadhaar card, a copy of their bank passbook and a passport-size photograph. With these documents ready, farmers can walk into any Jan Seva Kendra to file their application. Staff at the centre will also cross-check the farmer's land records and other details during the process, to make sure the subsidy reaches the right person. Farmers have the option of applying either online through the department's portal or offline at the service centre, whichever is more convenient.
How much subsidy each crop will get
The subsidy amount differs from crop to crop. Farmers growing hybrid vegetables can receive support of up to Rs 24,000 per hectare. Those cultivating flowers such as marigold will get a subsidy of Rs 20,000, and farmers growing spices, onion and garlic are entitled to assistance of up to Rs 20,000 as well. The horticulture department says demand for vegetables, flowers and spices in the market never really dries up, so taking up horticulture alongside conventional farming gives farmers a real chance to boost their overall earnings. Officials also expect the scheme to expand the area under horticulture crops in the district over time, opening up fresh farming options for local farmers in the years ahead.
