Bihar's jail department has suspended several employees across different divisions in one sweep. The assistant superintendent of Darbhanga divisional jail and multiple staff members of Beur central jail have been suspended in separate cases. The biggest and most talked about action has been taken against Nandu Chaudhary, deputy jailer of Darbhanga division, who faces serious allegations of murdering his wife and subjecting her to dowry harassment. The remaining employees have been suspended for negligence in their duties.
The case against Nandu Chaudhary
Nandu Chaudhary's case had been making headlines in Samastipur for the past several days. His wife, Shweta Kumari, was found hanging at their home in Sherpur village under Vidyapatinagar police station area. As soon as the incident came to light, Shweta Kumari's maternal family refused to accept it as suicide and alleged that it was murder. The family levelled serious allegations against Nandu Chaudhary as well as his parents. According to them, the in-laws had been continuously demanding dowry ever since the marriage. It is alleged that they were demanding 10 lakh rupees in cash along with a Fortuner car. The family also claims that a few days earlier, when the car was not arranged, Shweta Kumari was threatened with death. After the incident came out, the members of the in-laws' side fled the house, which made the case even more serious.
Immediate suspension, report ordered within a week
Following this entire controversy, the jail department has now suspended Nandu Chaudhary with immediate effect. The department has also prepared a charge sheet against him and directed the concerned officials to submit an inquiry report within one week. A case of dowry death was registered against Nandu Chaudhary at Vidyapatinagar police station in Samastipur district in 2026, and that investigation is proceeding separately.
Multiple staff suspended in Sasaram and Beur jails too
The action is not limited to Darbhanga alone. An employee at Sasaram divisional jail has also been suspended. Warder Sonu Kumar has been suspended there, accused of demanding 500 rupees from visitors, remaining on duty while intoxicated, and leaving the jail premises without permission. Separately, major action has also been taken at the central model Beur jail. Senior warder Umesh Kumar Sinha, along with three other warders, has been suspended there. They are accused of colluding with jail officials to openly ignore rules, allowing inmates to use facilities such as televisions and heaters inside the jail, causing irregularities in the running of the mess and the godown, serving poor quality food to inmates, and housing younger inmates alongside notorious criminals.
Action continues after the June 20 raid
In the same matter, warders Nirmal Kumar Paswan and Shivshankar Kumar have also been suspended for separate irregularities. A raid conducted at Beur jail on June 20 had exposed several serious lapses and irregularities. Following that raid, action was first taken against the jail superintendent and several senior officials. The jail department has now widened the scope of its inquiry and taken a strict stance against jail staff as well, indicating that it has grown serious about discipline and order inside Bihar's prisons.
