A deeply disturbing pattern of violence has gripped Ramtohma village in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district. On Saturday night, 70-year-old Marchiya Devi was shot dead by unidentified assailants while she slept at the entrance of her home in the Panapur OP police station area of Meenapur block. She died on the spot. Marchiya Devi was the wife of village resident Baldev Pandit.
The sound of gunfire drew family members and neighbours outside, where they found her lying in a pool of blood. Panic swept through the village and police were alerted without delay.
Senior Officials Arrive, SIT Formed
The Panapur OP police team reached the crime scene promptly. Recognising the gravity of the situation, DSP East One Alay Vatsa, SSP Muzaffarpur Kantesh Kumar Mishra, and Rural SP Rajesh Singh Prabhakar also arrived at the site. Officers conducted a thorough inspection, questioned family members and local residents, and recovered a bullet casing from the scene, which has been sent for forensic examination. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to lead the investigation.
Four Deaths in Four Years, Same Family Each Time
What makes this case far more alarming is the grim pattern behind it. Over the past four years, four members of this very family have been killed, two women and two men. SSP Kantesh Kumar Mishra confirmed that two prior murder cases involving the family were already on record before this incident, making Marchiya Devi's killing the third registered case. In one of the four deaths, a formal FIR had not been filed at all. Villagers are deeply frustrated that not a single one of these earlier cases has been resolved.
No Clear Motive, Fear of a Psycho Killer
Investigators have so far found no evidence of any personal feud, land dispute, or other identifiable motive connecting the killings. In the absence of an obvious explanation, villagers have begun to fear that a psycho killer may be systematically targeting the family. Police, however, have not officially drawn any conclusion on this theory and say the investigation remains open on all fronts.
Assurance of Swift Arrests
The SIT is working through technical and scientific evidence to identify the perpetrators. Senior officers have assured the community that the case will be cracked and those responsible brought to justice at the earliest.
