Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party has achieved a significant electoral milestone in Bihar politics. In the election results for the Darbhanga Teachers constituency of the Bihar Legislative Council, Jan Suraaj candidate Dr. Suresh Prasad Rai secured a memorable victory. With this win, he becomes the first member representing Jan Suraaj in the upper house of the state legislature. He defeated senior Indian National Congress leader and former state party president Madan Mohan Jha by a margin of 324 votes. Right from the initial rounds of counting first-preference votes, Rai maintained a steady lead, prompting his rival candidate to leave the counting center before the final announcement.
Detailed Vote Breakdown in Darbhanga Teachers Constituency
In a closely contested battle for the Darbhanga Teachers seat, Dr. Suresh Prasad Rai polled a total of 2,574 votes. His closest competitor and sitting MLC from Congress, Madan Mohan Jha, secured 2,187 votes, delivering a 324-vote victory margin for Rai. Among other contestants, Ramdev Rai of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPM, collected 1,498 votes. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Kumar Raut managed to secure only 126 votes. Madan Mohan Jha had won this seat in the previous two elections and had also served as a minister in the Mahagathbandhan government. However, early trends from the first-preference votes clearly pointed toward a decisive shift in favor of Jan Suraaj.
Mahagathbandhan Rift and Vote Splitting Dynamics
The absence of an alliance consensus among major opposition parties turned the constituency into a multi-cornered contest. Congress, RJD, and CPM fielded independent candidates, leading to significant vote fragmentation that ultimately favored Jan Suraaj. Across these Legislative Council elections, Congress and RJD contested against each other in five seats: Patna Teachers, Patna Graduates, Darbhanga Teachers, Darbhanga Graduates, and Kosi Graduates. Although RJD held no seat previously in Darbhanga Teachers, it fielded Kumar Raut after Congress decided to contest all five seats independently. Additionally, CPM fielded Ramdev Rai. This multi-cornered division undercut traditional Congress support and created a clear path to victory for Jan Suraaj.
Who is Dr. Suresh Prasad Rai: From BJP to Jan Suraaj
Dr. Suresh Prasad Rai has a long background in education as a retired government school teacher. A longtime active member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Rai had served as the state-level coordinator for the BJP Teachers Cell. In the previous Legislative Council election, he contested from the same Darbhanga Teachers constituency on a BJP ticket, finishing runner-up to Madan Mohan Jha. Discontented over ticket allocation decisions ahead of this election, he resigned from the BJP and joined the Jan Suraaj Party led by Prashant Kishor. Contesting on the Jan Suraaj ticket this time, he reversed his earlier loss to claim victory.
Entry into the Upper House and Broader Election Results
Jan Suraaj had previously established a presence in the lower house after winning the Bankipur assembly seat during recent by-elections, represented by former political strategist turned MLA Prashant Kishor. With this victory in the Darbhanga Teachers constituency, the party has now opened its account in the upper house, the Bihar Legislative Council. Conversely, the Congress party experienced a major setback, failing to win a single seat in these council elections.
Looking at other teacher constituencies across the state, the Patna Teachers seat witnessed a major political shift. RJD candidate Dr. Sanjeev Kumar defeated BJP candidate Naval Kishor by 1,057 votes, effectively ending nearly 30 years of BJP dominance in that constituency. In the Tirhut Teachers constituency, BJP candidate Narendra Prasad Singh secured victory by defeating his closest independent competitor Bhushan Kumar Jha by 594 votes. In the Saran Teachers constituency, BJP rebel and independent candidate Rahul Raj emerged victorious following the counting of second-preference votes.
