Political friction in Bihar has intensified further following a series of disciplinary actions against local heavyweights. In the latest development, Neelam Devi, the wife of political figure Anant Singh, has been served an official notice by the state administration directing her to vacate her government accommodation in Patna.
Mall Road Residence Eviction Order
The Bihar government has officially ordered former legislator Neelam Devi to vacate the government bungalow located on Mall Road in Patna. According to administrative departments, this directive comes in the wake of the termination of her membership in the state-level program implementation committee. She has been explicitly instructed to surrender the premises by November 25, 2026.
Expulsion From JDU Ranks
This development follows a major disciplinary move by the ruling Janata Dal United, which expelled both Mokama leader Anant Singh and his wife Neelam Devi from the party for a period of six years due to alleged anti-party activities. Alongside this expulsion, Anant Singh's primary membership within the organization was revoked with immediate effect. The party took stringent measures against the leader following internal defiance.
Allegations Of Defying Party Directives
A formal statement issued by JDU state unit president Umesh Singh कुशवाहा stated that Anant Singh continuously flouted organizational discipline and ignored core directives. The leadership accused him of utilizing disrespectful language against senior party office-bearers and actively campaigning in favor of a candidate fielded by an opposition political outfit.
The Legislative Council Election Factor
The core catalyst for these punitive measures was the recent Bihar Legislative Council election, where Anant Singh openly backed Jan Suraaj Party candidate Anuj Singh. He campaigned extensively for Anuj Singh and publicly challenged the party by vowing to defeat sitting JDU MLC Neeraj Kumar, prompting the leadership to categorize the move as gross indiscipline.
Recommendation To Terminate Assembly Membership
Going a step further, the ruling party has formally requested the Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly to strip Anant Singh of his legislative membership. The organization cited the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution, which deals with anti-defection provisions, though a final decision on the status of the seat remains subject to formal parliamentary procedures.
Deep Political Roots In Mokama
The Mokama assembly constituency has historically been a stronghold for Anant Singh and his family, where he is widely referred to locally as 'Chhote Sarkar'. After his legislative disqualification in 2022 following a court conviction, his wife Neelam Devi stepped into the political arena to preserve the family's legacy.
Shifting Political Alliances
RJD had fielded Anant Singh in the 2020 assembly elections, and subsequently gave a ticket to Neelam Devi in the 2022 bypolls, which she successfully won. However, political equations shifted in 2024 when Neelam Devi aligned with the NDA, a move reportedly taken with the concurrence of her husband.
