Rising water levels in the Gandak River have triggered severe flooding concerns in Bagaha, situated in Bihar's West Champaran region, following the breach of a major protection embankment. The structure gave way near the Chakhni-Khairtwa stretch under intense hydraulic pressure, allowing river waters to inundate surrounding residential zones and agricultural lands, triggering chaos among local populations.
Massive Discharge from Valmikinagar Barrage Drives Water Surge
The escalation follows a heavy release of water from the Gandak Barrage in Valmikinagar earlier on Monday morning. Authorities had recorded an enormous discharge of approximately 5.43 lakh cusecs through the barrage gates. Although emergency precautions were initiated along the vulnerable river stretches, the sheer volume and speed of the current overwhelmed the embankment at Chakhni-Khairtwa, causing the barrier to collapse.
Administration Mobilises as Waters Encroach on Settlements
Upon receiving alerts regarding the breach, teams from the local administration and the Water Resources Department rushed to the location to evaluate the damage. Executive Engineer Nemi Sharan of the Water Resources Department confirmed that the embankment had indeed broken. Officials on the ground are currently monitoring the path of the floodwaters and implementing containment measures to halt further erosion and spread.
Breach Occurs Hours After High-Level Assessment
Residents across adjacent villages remain gripped by fear as rising waters approach homes and farms. Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary had visited the flood-impacted regions of Champaran to review preparations and inspect defensive structures. Despite the inspection, the embankment caved in by evening, amplifying the imminent flood risk facing communities along the Gandak basin.
