Police achieved a major breakthrough in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district by safely rescuing abducted poultry feed businessman Chandan Kumar within 8 hours of his kidnapping. In a swift inter-state rescue operation, a joint team from Muzaffarpur Police and Uttar Pradesh Police raided a deserted location in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, apprehending four kidnappers who had demanded a ransom of 10 lakh rupees.
Abduction Scheme and Demands for Ransom
The incident unfolded on 19 August when Shweta Kumari, a resident of the Mithanpura police station area, approached law enforcement to report that her husband Chandan Kumar had been abducted by unidentified criminals. She informed authorities that the abductors were demanding a ransom of 10 lakh rupees for his safe release. Following the kidnapping, the criminals transported Chandan across state lines into Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, keeping him captive inside a dilapidated, isolated building.
To intimidate the family into quick payment, the kidnappers initiated a video call showing Chandan being physically assaulted. They explicitly threatened to murder him if the 10 lakh rupees extortion amount was not provided immediately. The victim's family managed to record the video call using another smartphone, securing crucial video evidence of the assault that was promptly shared with investigating officers.
Technical Surveillance Traces Location to UP
Recognizing the critical nature of the crime, police registered Case No. 233/26 at Mithanpura police station. Senior Superintendent of Police Kantesh Kumar Mishra immediately ordered the formation of a specialized task force to solve the case and safely rescue the victim. Investigators deployed technical surveillance and gathered human intelligence to track the perpetrators.
Cell tower data and technical inputs quickly narrowed down the victim's location to the Haldi police station jurisdiction in Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh. Armed with precise real-time coordinates, Muzaffarpur Police coordinated directly with Uttar Pradesh Police to launch a synchronized tactical strike.
Rescue from Dilapidated Building in Ballia
The joint police force executed a surprise raid on the targeted dilapidated structure in the Haldi police station area. Surrounding the perimeter, law enforcement officers breached the building and rescued Chandan Kumar completely unharmed within 8 hours of receiving the initial report.
During the operation, police captured all four kidnappers present at the scene. Law enforcement officials also seized one motor vehicle used by the syndicate alongside four mobile phones utilized to make the extortion calls.
Four Arrested Suspects and Ongoing Investigation
City SP Mohibullah Ansari confirmed that prompt action was initiated immediately after receiving the complaint from the victim's wife, Shweta Devi. The arrested suspects have been identified as Suraj Kumar alias Suraj Bhan Singh, a resident of Saran; Raushan Kumar, a resident of Kanpur; Gaurav Singh, also from Kanpur; and Abhishek Kumar, a resident of Samastipur.
During preliminary interrogation, all four accused confessed to plotting the abduction specifically to extort 10 lakh rupees from the businessman's family. Law enforcement authorities noted that investigations are actively ongoing to determine if this gang is linked to a broader inter-state crime network or received assistance from local informants.
