Monsoon Shift Across 16 States: 70KMPH Gusts in UP-Bihar, Delhi Awaits Arrival

The monsoon season is undergoing a significant transformation across the country, as noted in the latest updates from the India Meteorological Department. While some regions are preparing for heavy downpours, others remain in a waiting phase. This shift in the monsoon's path is expected to influence not only temperatures but also agricultural productivity and daily life. As a new weather system becomes active, the intensity of the heat is gradually expected to fade, with the reach of monsoon showers continuing to expand across various parts of the nation.

Alerts Issued for 16 States

The weather department has issued alerts for rain and high-velocity winds across 16 states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Assam, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. In some regions, wind speeds are projected to reach between 60 and 70 kilometers per hour. According to the IMD, the monsoon is expected to advance rapidly into Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, and Gujarat over the next three to four days. Skymet has simultaneously forecasted continuous heavy rainfall in Northeast India, while the monsoon will remain active throughout Southern India as well.

Delhi-NCR: Anticipating Early July Arrival

The arrival of the monsoon in Delhi and the NCR region is experiencing a slight delay compared to initial expectations. While it was previously estimated to arrive by June 27, current forecasts suggest it is now likely to reach the region by the first week of July. However, this does not mean the weather will remain dry. Pre-monsoon activity, including light rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds, is anticipated between June 27 and July 1. Temperatures are expected to start dropping from June 28, with the probability of rainfall becoming more pronounced by June 30 and July 1. While residents may need to wait slightly longer for intense downpours, relief from the current heat is expected to commence soon.

Uttar Pradesh: Changes Expected from June 29

In Uttar Pradesh, the weather is expected to remain relatively calm for two days before a significant shift begins on June 29. Alerts have been issued for districts including Lucknow, Meerut, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Bareilly, Hathras, Mau, Ballia, and Auraiya. Between June 29 and July 1, the state could witness heavy rainfall accompanied by winds reaching speeds of 70 kilometers per hour. Residents are advised to exercise caution due to the risk of lightning and squalls, though the rainfall is expected to be beneficial for farmers.

Extended Rainfall in Bihar

The monsoon is intensifying rapidly in Bihar. Districts such as Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Purnia, Katihar, Saharsa, Madhubani, Supaul, and both West and East Champaran are likely to experience light rain until June 28. Following this, a period of heavy rainfall is expected to commence from June 29 and continue intermittently until July 2. Maximum temperatures are forecast to drop by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next five days, providing relief from humidity. This weather is considered highly advantageous for paddy cultivation.

Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh Outlook

In Rajasthan, districts including Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, Bikaner, Udaipur, Bharatpur, Alwar, Bundi, Chittorgarh, Tonk, Pratapgarh, and Sawai Madhopur are likely to receive good rainfall between June 27 and June 29. Wind speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour are expected, bringing much-needed relief to those suffering from long-term heat. Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh appears to be the primary focus of the monsoon's activity. Heavy rainfall is predicted for most parts of the state, including Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Jabalpur, Sagar, Rewa, Satna, Narmadapuram, Betul, Dhar, Dewas, Ratlam, Shajapur, and Balaghat. Wind gusts of up to 50 kilometers per hour are possible, creating favorable conditions for Kharif sowing. Punjab and Haryana are also seeing the end of heatwave conditions as they prepare for the monsoon's entry.

What this means for you

Across India: Exercise caution during travel due to anticipated heavy rainfall and high-velocity winds, while being mindful of potential waterlogging and lightning strikes in open areas.

In Delhi-NCR: Expect persistent humidity until the monsoon arrives in early July, so prioritize hydration and monitor local weather updates closely.
