A tragic road accident unfolded in Bihar's Madhubani district on Monday morning when a high-speed SUV crushed three women to death while they were returning home from their daily routine. The incident occurred on the edge of the Benipatti State Highway near a petrol pump in Sarisab village, falling under the jurisdiction of the Benipatti police station. All three victims died on the spot before any medical assistance could arrive at the scene.
Uncontrolled SUV Hits Returning Walkers
According to details regarding the incident, a group of around six women hailing from Navtoli-Dhakjari village had gone out for their regular morning walk. As they finished their walk and were walking alongside the highway roadside to return to their homes, a rapidly approaching Scorpio SUV suddenly lost control and plowed into them. The vehicle was moving at such extreme speed that the victims had no time to step aside or react. Three of the women absorbed the full impact of the uncontrolled vehicle and died instantly on the road.
Angry Villagers Block Highway in Protest
News of the fatal collision spread rapidly through the neighboring areas, bringing a large crowd of local residents to the site. Overwhelmed with grief and anger over the sudden loss of lives, the local villagers staged a severe road blockade across the state highway, demanding immediate official action. The intense protest brought vehicular movement to a complete standstill, leading to long queues of stranded vehicles extending over one kilometer on both directions of the Benipatti highway.
Police Intervention and Postmortem Procedures
Given the rising tension and crowd gather at the location, police personnel from both Benipatti and Arer police stations rushed to the spot. Officers spent considerable effort engaging in dialogue with the aggrieved family members and local residents to calm the situation down and facilitate the removal of the deceased. Following prolonged discussions, authorities persuaded the crowd and dispatched two of the bodies to the Sadar Hospital in Madhubani for postmortem examination. However, the family members of the third deceased woman refused to allow an autopsy on her body.
Mourning in Villages and Ongoing Investigation
The deceased women have been officially identified as Rita Devi, Kiran Devi, and Phuldai Devi, all residents of the Navtoli-Dhakjari village area. The tragic and sudden deaths have plunged both Dhakjari and Navtoli villages into deep mourning. Meanwhile, law enforcement officials have launched a search operation to identify and arrest the unknown vehicle driver who fled the scene, while simultaneously investigating the precise causes behind the fatal crash.
