The Rohtas Civil Court in Bihar has sentenced convict Sonu Kumar to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his pregnant fiancée. Along with the life term, the court imposed a financial penalty of 30,000 rupees on him. Despite marriage being officially agreed upon by both families, the accused lured the woman away under the pretext of taking her to Prayagraj for a holy bath at Kumbh, only to murder her in a secluded area of Rohtas and conceal her body in a mustard field. The verdict was delivered based on circumstantial evidence and the depositions of 12 prosecution witnesses.
Marriage Fixed After Pregnancy, Traveled Under Pretext of Kumbh Bath
The origins of the case trace back to February 2025 in Ghaghra police station area of Gumla district, Jharkhand. Sonu Kumar, who worked as a delivery boy, was involved in a romantic relationship with a woman residing in the same village. During their relationship, the woman became pregnant. Upon learning about the pregnancy, both families agreed to turn the relationship into a formal marriage, which was scheduled for July 2025. However, before the wedding could take place, Sonu Kumar executed a calculated plan. He convinced his fiancée to join him on a motorcycle trip from Gumla to Prayagraj for a holy dip at Kumbh.
Murder in Sasaram Hills and Disposal of Evidence in Kudra River
Instead of completing the journey to Prayagraj, Sonu diverted the route towards Sasaram in Rohtas district. According to the police charge sheet, he escorted the woman into a deserted hilly terrain located within the Dhaodadh police station jurisdiction. There, he attacked her with a sharp edged weapon, causing her death. To conceal the crime, he discarded her body inside an adjacent mustard field and fled. During the investigation, it was further revealed that he disposed of the murder weapon and the victim's clothes into a river passing through the Kudra region in neighboring Kaimur district.
Body Recovered After 5 Days, 12 Witnesses Testify to Secure Conviction
Approximately 5 days after the victim left her home, local authorities discovered her corpse in the Dhaodadh area. Police investigated the circumstances surrounding her relationship with Sonu Kumar, connected the chain of events, and submitted a detailed charge sheet in court. During the judicial trial, the prosecution presented 12 witnesses along with physical evidence tying Sonu Kumar to the scene and the motive. Evaluating the complete body of evidence, the Rohtas Civil Court found Sonu Kumar guilty of murder, sentencing him to life in prison and imposing a 30,000 rupee fine.
