What looked like a straightforward robbery case in Muzaffarpur's Kanti police station area has turned out to be an elaborate family plot. Investigators discovered that the robbery never actually happened, instead, a son-in-law had engineered the entire scene to get his brother-in-law jailed on false charges and then seize his mother-in-law's land and property. Police arrested Nitesh Chaubey, a resident of Kanti, from Deoghar in Jharkhand, and the plot unravelled once he was questioned.
How the conspiracy was built
During questioning, Nitesh Chaubey told police that he had planned to trap his brother-in-law, Dharmesh Kumar, in a false case and get him sent to jail. To pull this off, he took his friend Manish Kumar into confidence and had him drop his mother-in-law's voter identity card along with two old documents linked to a bank account near the spot where the alleged robbery occurred. The idea was that the presence of these documents at the scene would steer the police investigation directly toward Dharmesh, landing him in jail on the robbery charge. Nitesh's real intention was to later pose as the one helping to get his brother-in-law released, using that favour as cover to take control of his mother-in-law's land and property. His friend Manish Kumar was drawn into the scheme and used to carry it out.
A complaint was filed on the night of June 25
According to DSP (West) Suchitra Kumari, the robbery was reported on the night of June 25 in the Kanti area, and Manish Kumar had filed the complaint. Treating the case as serious, Senior Superintendent of Police Kantesh Kumar Mishra ordered a special team be formed to get to the bottom of it. The team pieced together technical leads and human intelligence during its investigation, and the trail eventually led to Nitesh Chaubey. He was traced to Deoghar, arrested there, and brought back to Muzaffarpur.
The full plot came out during interrogation
Once in custody, Nitesh Chaubey admitted to the entire plan during questioning. He confessed that he had deliberately set up this trap to implicate his brother-in-law, Dharmesh Kumar. Police said Nitesh's scheme had two parts, first getting Dharmesh jailed on a false case, and then using the pretext of securing his release to grab his mother-in-law's land and property. Following this disclosure, a fresh case was registered at Kanti police station and Nitesh Chaubey was arrested.
Search for other accused continues
Police say raids are underway at multiple locations to track down others allegedly involved in the conspiracy. Investigators are also going through Nitesh Chaubey's past criminal record to check whether he has been linked to similar cases before. Officials say the investigation into all aspects of the case is ongoing and further details may emerge in the coming days.
