The incident took place at the Kosi Barrage in Supaul on the auspicious occasion of the third Monday of Sawan, when thousands of pilgrims gather to collect holy water for Lord Shiva. The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Sanjeet Kumar Sharma, a resident of Achara village in the Araria district. Sanjeet had traveled to the Kosi Barrage, located in the Nepal territory near Bhimnagar in Supaul, alongside a few friends to participate in the Sawan pilgrimage rituals. At around 2:30 AM on Monday, he reached near gate number 12 of the barrage. In an effort to collect water and simultaneously shoot a video for social media platforms, Sanjeet climbed down from the bridge toward a concrete pillar situated amidst the fierce, rushing waves of the river. After the recording was completed, as he attempted to haul himself back up by gripping a pillar, his hand suddenly slipped. Losing his balance entirely, he plunged straight into the deep, raging currents of the Kosi River.

Sanjeet vanished beneath the turbulent waters almost instantly, triggering immediate panic and chaos among the people present at the scene. Within moments, a large crowd of fellow Kanwarias and pilgrims gathered along the barrage.
