Recalling that critical intervention, Swara described Umar as their cupid, noting that he was the specific individual responsible for connecting them.
Under normal circumstances, Swara rarely entertained calls arriving from unrecognized or unlisted telephone numbers. However, nationwide agitation against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was underway at that moment, keeping her in frequent coordination with organizers and participants across the movement. Because she was engaged with individuals linked to the demonstrations, she decided to pick up the unknown caller. For Fahad, that brief introductory exchange turned into the most consequential conversation of his life.
Three Years of Friendship Rooted in Common Grounds
During that very first call, Fahad extended an invitation to Swara to participate in a demonstration scheduled for the 19th. Their interactions soon transitioned from phone screens to in-person rallies as they repeatedly crossed paths at public protest venues. Those shared gatherings laid the groundwork for an enduring camaraderie.
Rather than rushing into romance, the couple remained close friends for roughly three years. Over that extended period, frequent conversations and shared experiences gradually deepened their mutual bond. The friendship steadily evolved into a romantic relationship, eventually leading them to make the shared choice to marry.
Legal Union Under the Special Marriage Act and Family Life
Swara and Fahad initiated their marriage paperwork in January 2023, formalizing their legal union on February 16, 2023, under the provisions of the Special Marriage Act. Following the official registration of their partnership, the couple hosted an elaborate wedding reception in Delhi with their circle of guests. Later in September 2023, the family expanded when they welcomed the birth of their daughter, Raabiyaa.
Reflections on Interfaith Marriage and Umar Khalid's Legal Status
Reflecting on the realities of entering an interfaith union, Swara expressed that when someone finds a genuinely decent and authentic partner, external differences cease to carry weight. Umar Khalid, whose recommendation sparked the relationship, is a former JNU student leader and activist. He remains an accused individual in the alleged larger conspiracy case tied to the 2020 Northeast Delhi communal violence and is detained under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). In July 2026, a Delhi court rejected his latest application seeking bail.
