Veteran actor Pradeep Rawat, widely recognized for his impactful performances across Indian cinema and television, passed away on Tuesday evening in Mumbai at the age of 74. Spanning a career of over four decades, he delivered memorable performances in numerous Hindi feature films as well as several regional language productions and television shows. Over the years, Pradeep Rawat shared the screen with prominent industry figures, including Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, leaving a lasting impression with key roles in major motion pictures such as Lagaan and Ghajini. His passing marks the end of an era for his admirers and colleagues, while also bringing back memories of his close personal association with Salman Khan during the formative years of his career.
Six Months at Galaxy Apartments
In a previously recorded interview with interviewer Siddharth Kannan, Pradeep Rawat had openly discussed his deep personal connection with Salman Khan and how their bond originally developed. The friendship between the two actors took root during the production of the 1990 film Baaghi. At that time, both Pradeep Rawat and Salman Khan shared a intense passion for physical fitness and rigorous weight training workouts. This shared commitment to fitness became the foundation of an immediate friendship.
Reflecting on that phase of his life, Pradeep Rawat recounted how Salman Khan insisted on having him over at his home. For a continuous stretch of four to six months, Salman Khan would not let him return to his own place. During this period, Pradeep Rawat lived directly out of Salman Khan's residence at Galaxy Apartments. He shared meals, slept at the residence, exercised alongside Salman, showered, changed clothes, and left for his daily film shoots directly from Galaxy Apartments.
Rented Suits for High-Profile Events
Pradeep Rawat also spoke about his modest resources during those early days. Salman Khan frequently attended high-profile industry gatherings and elite parties. Pradeep Rawat did not possess the formal suits necessary for such lavish events. Noticing this, Salman Khan personally made arrangements to rent tailored suits for Pradeep Rawat whenever an important event took place so that his friend could accompany him comfortably.
Choosing Career Growth Over Comfort
Despite the immense hospitality and luxurious surroundings at Salman Khan's home, Pradeep Rawat eventually made a conscious decision to move out and create distance. Explaining his reasoning, he stated that he began to feel overly reliant on the comfortable and lavish lifestyle provided to him. He realized that becoming accustomed to such ease might hamper his personal drive to build an independent acting career.
Pradeep Rawat candidly observed that had he stayed on that path, he might have eventually stepped into a role similar to that of Salman Khan's chief bodyguard, Shera. He noted that while having access to good food, premium lodging, and welcoming companionship was deeply comforting, it was not taking him closer to his primary destination as an actor. Consequently, he decided to step away from those luxuries before he became too dependent on them.
An Unexpected Reunion in Middle of Traffic
Following his departure, Pradeep Rawat lost contact with Salman Khan for several years. Their eventual reunion happened unexpectedly on a public street. Pradeep Rawat was driving his Maruti Van when he spotted Salman Khan driving a large luxury vehicle from the opposite direction. Upon making eye contact, Salman Khan halted his vehicle right in the middle of the road, leaving Pradeep Rawat with no choice but to stop his Maruti Van as well.
The sudden stop immediately brought surrounding vehicles to a halt, creating a noticeable traffic congestion on the road. Passersby recognized Salman Khan, leading to a large crowd gathering around both vehicles. Local police and traffic personnel quickly arrived at the scene to manage the crowd. Salman Khan stepped out of his car, Pradeep Rawat exited his van, and the two embraced. Salman Khan expressed his frustration over Pradeep Rawat having disappeared for so long without staying in touch. Pradeep Rawat explained that he had been busy with various acting assignments and shootings, to which Salman Khan affectionately insisted that they must catch up again soon.
