Malayalam film icon Mammootty has long enjoyed immense respect for both his commanding screen presence and his grounded personality. Having received the National Award and the Padma Bhushan honour earlier this year, his decades-long career frequently brings forth nostalgic anecdotes from collaborators. In a memorable recollection, actor and author VK Sreeraman recently shared a gripping experience from nearly forty years ago that reads almost like a sequence scripted for the big screen. The incident traces back to an unexpected road mishap where a ten-year-old schoolboy collided with Mammootty's car, culminating in a surprising and comic resolution rather than the disaster both travellers initially anticipated.
A Drive from Ooty in the Iconic 369 Contessa
According to VK Sreeraman, the episode took place while the crew was filming director Pavithran's movie 'Utharam' in the scenic hill station of Ooty. Sreeraman and Mammootty needed to journey down from the hills toward Coimbatore. They set off in Mammootty's well-known Contessa, which carried his signature registration number 369, with the actor himself taking the wheel. Navigating the winding descent through the slopes, the journey seemed routine until they reached the stretch passing in front of a local convent school.
Without warning, a ten-year-old student dashed across the road to catch a waiting bus. The sudden movement left little room for evasion, and the Contessa struck the child. Mammootty reacted instantly by slamming on the brakes, producing a jolt violent enough that Sreeraman, seated in the front passenger seat, hit his head against the car windscreen. As the vehicle came to a dead stop, both men stepped out into the open, anticipating immediate trouble.
Fears of Public Outrage Dispel into Disbelief
Stepping onto the tarmac, Sreeraman's mind raced through worst-case scenarios. He worried that seeing a schoolchild struck right outside an educational institution would provoke furious local bystanders into vandalising the vehicle or physically assaulting them. Such road incidents often escalate rapidly, and the vulnerability of being on a hill highway added to their anxiety.
However, the scene awaiting them turned out to be the exact opposite of what they had feared. The force of the impact had propelled the young boy toward a roadside drain. Several onlookers had already gathered and were helping him up, walking him toward the car. To the utter astonishment of both Mammootty and Sreeraman, the boy showed no signs of panic or grave distress. Instead, he was standing upright on his own feet and smiling cheerfully at the travellers.
The Cricket Balls That Shielded a Young Life
The explanation behind this miraculous outcome arrived via the school's security chief, who had witnessed the collision and hurried over to clarify what happened. The security head explained that the impact of the car had landed squarely on the boy's right thigh. Fortunately, inside that very pocket of the boy's trousers were two hard cricket balls. Rather than crushing muscle or fracturing bone, the kinetic energy of the car bumper was largely absorbed and deflected by the dense spheres.
Furthermore, when the boy flew backward from the contact, he landed amidst a cushion of soft creepers and roadside foliage rather than bare rocks or hard pavement. The vegetation broke his fall entirely, sparing him any catastrophic trauma. Marveling at the spectacle, the security chief commented that the sequence looked just like a cinematic stunt. Extending a hand toward Mammootty, he praised the actor as a genuine real-life hero. A profoundly relieved Mammootty accepted the handshake with a wide smile.
Banter on the Highway and Lingering Paranoia
Once the matter was safely defused and the two artists climbed back into the car, Mammootty broke the tension by asking Sreeraman whether he had been thoroughly frightened by the episode. Sreeraman confessed with characteristic wit that his terror was of an entirely practical variety. He admitted fearing that the crowd would mistake him for the hired chauffeur because of his plain attire, sparing the charismatic film star while thrashing him for reckless driving near a school zone.
Mammootty seized the opening for a swift comeback, retorting that in his current outfit, Sreeraman indeed looked every bit like a driver. Yet even the lighthearted banter did not fully calm Sreeraman's nerves. Throughout the remaining journey along the winding roads to Coimbatore, he found himself repeatedly checking the rear-view mirrors and looking out the back window, terrified that an angry convoy of locals and the injured boy might still be racing behind them to demand an explanation.
A Four-Decade-Old Memory Strikes a Chord
VK Sreeraman's recollection of this forty-year-old incident has captured notable attention across social media platforms. Audiences have appreciated the candid, humorous manner in which he chronicled a potentially terrifying moment from their past. The narrative highlights the enduring camaraderie between Mammootty and Sreeraman, while offering an engaging testament to the bizarre, unpredictable turns of fate that can transform an impending calamity into a shared lifetime memory.
