In a major boost to regional connectivity across Bihar, the National Highways Authority has cleared the construction of a 143-kilometer roadway linking Khagaria and Purnia districts. Spanning across National Highway-31 and National Highway-231, the newly approved route will cut commute times between the two hubs by approximately 2 hours while introducing designated toll plazas to manage the upgraded infrastructure.
Cabinet Approval and 3,936 Crore Rupee Capital Outlay
The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, granted formal approval for this highway venture in June. The comprehensive project entails an estimated investment of around 3,936 crore rupees. Commuters navigating the existing stretch between Khagaria and Purnia regularly deal with hazardous sharp curves that present serious safety risks and trigger frequent accidents. Chronic traffic bottlenecks also slow movement down, both of which will be tackled once the new corridor eliminates bottlenecks and saves 2 hours of transit time.
Direct Gains for Four Districts and Purnia Greenfield Bypass
The operational corridor will transform everyday mobility across four districts: Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Katihar, and Purnia. Alongside the 143-kilometer highway alignment, the venture incorporates a dedicated 6.72-kilometer greenfield bypass around Purnia city. This diversion will direct through traffic away from the congested core of Purnia. Beyond upgrading road safety and saving 2 hours on trips, the route is set to spur commerce and create employment openings across the four interconnected districts.
Connectivity for Business Clusters and Logistics Nodes
Once completed, the Purnia-Khagaria corridor will cater directly to 5 major commercial parks in the belt. These hubs encompass 1 textile cluster, 2 mega food parks, and 2 fishing and sea-food parks. Furthermore, the route will link 11 key logistics nodes, which include 4 prominent railway stations, 1 airport, 4 national highways, and 2 state highways. The upgraded access will benefit regular local travelers as well as business visitors and tourists arriving from other states.
Tendering Underway with a Two-Year Completion Outlook
The National Highways Authority has invited tenders from local contractors, establishing an application fee of 3.40 lakh rupees. Bids remain open until November 17. While authorities have not officially notified a completion deadline, construction is anticipated to wrap up within the next 2 years. At present, severe gridlock on the National Highway-31 stretch through Khagaria, Naugachia, and Purnia creates substantial traffic management hurdles that this new route will systematically resolve.
