Marigold farming in the fields of Faridabad is seeing a fresh approach as local cultivators look toward new crop varieties for better yields and stronger market returns. While the region traditionally relies heavily on the popular Kolkata marigold variety, a farmer in Sahupura village has taken a distinct path by planting Ajmer's Tiranga Jaffri variety. With the crop currently maturing in the fields after being planted about a month and a half ago, the cultivator hopes that favorable market prices will help recover past financial setbacks incurred during previous farming cycles.
Shifting From Kolkata to Ajmer Variety
Laxman Singh, a resident of Ucha village in Ballabgarh who farms in Sahupura village, shared insights about his latest agricultural decision. He explained that after experiencing losses with the Kolkata marigold variety in the past, an acquaintance introduced him to the Ajmer Tiranga Jaffri variety and even helped arrange the seeds. Intrigued by its potential, he decided to test the new crop on roughly one acre of land, officially kicking off the cultivation process approximately a month and a half ago.
Cultivation Process and Field Preparation
While neighboring farmers in the area continue to stick with the traditional Kolkata variety, the Ajmer Tiranga Jaffri is recognized as a superior option known for strong yields. Encouraged by this reputation, Singh ordered around 250 grams of seeds for the current season. Cultivating marigolds requires substantial labor and meticulous preparation. The field must be tilled about four times, which involves running a harrow twice and a cultivator twice. Afterward, ridges are constructed, and irrigation is managed according to the crop's needs. If rainfall is absent, watering the fields becomes necessary at least once every 10 days.
Market Volatility and Price Expectations
Having witnessed financial setbacks with the previous crop variety, Singh holds high expectations for this new experiment. Marigold flower prices in the market fluctuate constantly and lack a fixed rate, though flowers can sometimes command prices as high as around 200 rupees per kilogram depending on daily demand and supply dynamics.
