A blockbuster stock market debut by Jio Platforms has reshuffled the hierarchy of India's corporate landscape. Propelled by aggressive buying on listing day, the Reliance Group has emerged as the country's most valuable business conglomerate. The valuation surge helped Reliance displace the Tata Group, which had retained leadership in overall market capitalisation for the past decade. Data compiled by Bloomberg indicates that strong trading momentum pushed Reliance Group's combined market capitalisation beyond the ₹30 lakh crore threshold, leaving the Tata Group's consolidated market value at approximately ₹25 lakh crore. For years, the Tata Group had held the distinction of being India's most valuable corporate house.
Premium Debut Fuels Massive First-Day Valuation Surge
Shares of Jio Platforms began their trading journey at a 21 percent premium over their issue price. Robust investor demand sustained aggressive buying throughout the inaugural session, driving the stock up by nearly 27 percent from its issue price during intraday trade. This rapid upward climb added ₹52,031.02 crore to the company's valuation in a single session. Consequently, the firm's total market capitalisation escalated from ₹12,50,586.39 crore directly to ₹13,02,617.41 crore by the close of the trading day.
Telecom Leadership and Second Spot in Domestic Markets
Following this remarkable debut, Jio has eclipsed Bharti Airtel to claim the mantle of India's most valuable telecommunications enterprise. The listing has also altered the nationwide leaderboard across all sectors on domestic exchanges. Jio Platforms now ranks as the second most valuable listed company in the entire Indian stock market, positioned directly behind its own parent company, Reliance Industries.
Historic Public Issue Fully Booked in 100 Minutes
The foundation for this landmark market listing was established during an unprecedented primary market offering. Bidding for Jio's initial public offering saw the entire issue fully subscribed within just 100 minutes of opening. That response stands as the fastest full subscription ever recorded in the history of domestic public issues. Demand from institutional participants was exceptionally intense, with the ₹5,500 crore quota reserved for Qualified Institutional Buyers, known as QIBs, getting completely filled in barely 10 minutes.
Induction into an Elite Global Valuation Fraternity
Calculated at its base issue price, Jio Platforms commanded an enterprise valuation of approximately ₹10.3 lakh crore, which translates to roughly $108 billion. By surpassing the hundred-billion-dollar mark at the time of its initial public offering, the company has entered a rare group of global founder-led corporations. Globally, only a handful of founder-driven enterprises, such as Meta, Alibaba, and SpaceX, have commanded market valuations exceeding $100 billion at their initial public offerings.
