As National Handloom Day is celebrated across the country, encouraging financial data has emerged from the industrial hub of Noida regarding the handloom and handicraft trade. The handloom and handicraft sector in Noida registered a significant growth of approximately 35 to 40 percent compared to the previous year. This upward trajectory is largely attributed to supportive government policies and the rising participation of local entrepreneurs. However, while domestic market demand continues to expand rapidly, ongoing geopolitical tensions overseas have introduced temporary headwinds for international exports.
Policy Support and Strong Domestic Demand
Elaborating on the current state of the industry, CP Sharma, President of the Noida Handloom Handicraft Exporters Welfare Association (HHEWA), stated that since 2014, micro, small, and medium entrepreneurs have gained substantial momentum through various government schemes. These targeted initiatives have encouraged a steady influx of new business owners into the sector. The impact was clearly visible at the recently organized India Gift Fair, which featured more than 850 stalls dedicated to handloom and handicraft products. The exhibition received an enthusiastic response from both national and international buyers. Emerging product segments such as promotional gifts, wedding gifts, political merchandise, and religious gifts are experiencing robust demand, expanding the commercial landscape for local artisans.
Noida's Contribution to Uttar Pradesh Export Revenues
Noida remains the primary engine driving Uttar Pradesh's export economy. Official figures show that Uttar Pradesh contributes approximately 12 percent to India's total national exports. Crucially, Noida alone accounts for 30 to 35 percent of the total export volume originating from the state. Out of approximately 16,000 active industrial units operating in Noida, around 8,000 to 9,000 businesses are directly engaged in handloom and handicraft exports. The One District One Product (ODOP) scheme has played a vital role in positioning local craft products on global platforms. Building on this momentum, the launch of the One District One Cuisine initiative is expected to unlock further commercial opportunities for traditional and emerging enterprises.
Impact of Global Conflicts and Future Outlook
Despite strong domestic fundamentals, international trade channels are experiencing friction due to external geopolitical events. HHEWA President CP Sharma highlighted that ongoing hostilities between Iran and Israel, alongside heightened security concerns around the Strait of Hormuz, have disrupted global maritime shipping routes. This shipping instability has affected exporters across India, leading to a temporary decline of around 10 to 15 percent in overseas orders for Noida's handicraft exporters. Nevertheless, industry leaders remain optimistic that once global geopolitical conditions stabilize, continuous state support will enable the sector to swiftly resume its high growth rate.
