Among the diverse scented preparations crafted in this historic hub, one prestigious category stands out as the supreme king of perfumes, known as ruh. Distilled directly from pure botanical extracts, this rare essence does far more than diffuse a fragrance, offering a cooling sensation alongside rich, earthy, and floral notes.
The Staggering Value of Pure Botanical Extracts
The market value of authentic ruh far outstrips conventional commercial perfumes, reaching numbers that often surprise observers. For instance, authentic ruh gulab commands anywhere between 20 to 22 lakh rupees. Several other varieties in this pure category trade within the range of 10 to 15 lakh rupees. At the extreme end of scarcity, an exceptionally rare ruh variety fetches prices exceeding 50 lakh rupees, reflecting the sheer dedication, raw materials, and precision required to extract it.
Hydro Distillation Through Copper Deg and Bhabhka
To produce authentic ruh, the master craftsmen of Kannauj continue to rely on the ancient hydro distillation method involving copper degs, receiver bhabhkas, and wood-fired clay kilns. Fresh blossoms, clean water, and select botanical herbs are placed inside large copper cauldrons and simmered over a gentle fire for numerous continuous hours. The aromatic steam generated inside the sealed vessel travels through traditional bamboo pipes into a receiving vessel, where condensation turns the vapor into pure essential oil.
Distinctive Profiles of Khas and Rose Distillates
Different seasons highlight the distinct appeals of individual distillates. During the intense summer months, ruh khas enjoys peak popularity; extracted from the dense root network of vetiver grass, it releases a scent reminiscent of rain-soaked earth. In contrast, ruh gulab is distilled purely from fresh rose petals, delivering a gentle, sweet, and revitalizing fragrance. Because these formulations are produced through entirely natural means without synthetic chemicals, they command enormous appreciation across international export markets.
An Inherited Cultural and Artisanal Legacy
Perfume trader Nishish Tiwari pointed out that local artisans in Kannauj have diligently preserved and passed down this intricate knowledge through successive generations. He highlighted that ruh is far more than a luxury scent, representing an essential pillar of Kannauj's cultural and historical heritage, with every distinct blend preserving its own unique identity and character.
