Indian utility vehicle specialist Mahindra has revitalized its iconic three-door off-roader with substantial mechanical upgrades, reintroducing it under the Thar OG moniker. Designed to replace the outgoing 2020 generation, the updated vehicle enters the market at an introductory starting price of Rs 10.32 lakh, ex-showroom. The automaker will commence customer deliveries for the new model on October 11, 2026.
Refined Four-Wheel Drive Mechanics and Terrain Settings
Engineers have heavily overhauled the four-wheel drive hardware to tackle demanding landscapes more effectively. The vehicle integrates sophisticated off-road electronic management alongside an Electronic Locking Differential, giving motorists significantly improved torque distribution on challenging trails. A dedicated suite of terrain settings has been integrated directly into the system.
A Mud Mode has been calibrated specifically to help the wheels retain traction through swampy bogs and deep slush without bogging down. For negotiating loose coastal shores or desert dunes, a Sand Mode ensures persistent throttle responsiveness to avoid sinking into shifting earth. Drivers venturing across frozen stretches like Ladakh can switch to Snow Mode, which delivers precise traction control and cornering grip across icy, low-friction tarmac.
Three Distinct Powertrain Choices Across Petrol and Diesel
To cater to different driving duties and budgets, the Thar OG presents a choice of three powertrain configurations. Enthusiasts looking for lively highway acceleration have access to a 2.0-litre G20 TGDi mStallion turbocharged petrol engine. This setup produces approximately 160 hp alongside 330 Nm of peak torque, offering immediate throttle response.
For rigorous backcountry expeditions and extended highway touring, the company offers a 2.2-litre D22 mHawk diesel powerplant churning out 150 hp and 330 Nm of pulling power. Meanwhile, buyers seeking an economical alternative for routine city commutes can opt for the 1.5-litre D117 CRDe diesel unit. Paired with a rear-wheel drive drivetrain, this motor outputs 117 hp and 300 Nm of torque.
Updated Chassis Architecture and Cabin Comfort
Addressing historic complaints regarding the choppy ride and overly rigid suspension setup of the earlier model, the company shifted the Thar OG onto its proprietary M_Glyde 4G platform. This revised underbody increases torsional rigidity for greater structural durability over demanding trails.
The rear suspension incorporates a Pentalink arrangement assisted by a Watts Link, complemented by Frequency Dependent Damping hardware designed to progressively absorb sharp jolts from deep potholes and rocky unevenness. Steering effort has been modernized via an electric power steering assembly. Furthermore, upgraded NVH insulation materials surround the passenger compartment, significantly dampening unwanted road rumble and aerodynamic wind noise.
Comprehensive Safety Gear on the Flagship ZXT Grade
Occupant protection receives notable attention on the flagship ZXT variant. This range-topping trim comes fitted with six airbags, featuring four dedicated HPTS units configured to shield the occupant head, pelvis, thorax, and shoulder zones during an impact. All four corners receive disc brakes managed by an ESP 9.3 stability module. Maneuvering in tight environments is supported by front parking sensors and a rear-view parking camera, while a real-time Tyre Pressure Monitoring System keeps constant track of inflation levels.
