Starting a poultry farming business alongside agriculture can turn out to be a highly lucrative venture for individuals looking to generate steady income through egg production. Since market demand for eggs remains consistently high, choosing the right breed is essential to run this enterprise successfully. Before diving into poultry farming, understanding which breeds yield the highest number of eggs is crucial for maximizing profits. Experts consider five specific chicken breeds to be the best for egg production, including two varieties recently developed specifically for this purpose, namely Sonali and Vanraj.
Top Egg-Laying Breeds and Their Traits
Among the most famous high-yielding varieties, White Leghorn holds a prominent position known for its exceptional commercial egg production capacity. Another major contender is Rhode Island Red, an American breed that produces a large quantity of premium-priced eggs. Ranking fourth on the list is Aseel, which yields between 100 and 120 eggs, while the Kadaknath breed takes the fifth spot with a similar output of 100 to 120 eggs. Although Aseel and Kadaknath produce fewer eggs compared to specialized layers, their eggs command higher market prices, ensuring good returns despite lower overall volume.
Expert Insights and Classification of Birds
Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Subodh Goyal explained during an interaction that whether birds are kept for egg production, chick breeding, or meat output, their varieties and strains differ significantly. They are bred in specific ways to achieve higher meat yields in shorter timeframes. Famous native Indian varieties include Aseel and Kadaknath, which features black meat. Aseel functions as a gamebird yielding up to 100 eggs, while Kadaknath matches a similar output of around 100 eggs. Following these are dual-purpose birds that fall into a medium category.
Government-Developed Advanced Varieties
These dual-purpose birds outperform native varieties in egg production, delivering between 200 and 280 eggs. Central government institutions such as ICAR, IVRI, and facilities in Hyderabad have also developed specialized dual-purpose bird varieties, namely Sonali and Vanraj. These breeds can be easily raised around residential areas as they suffer from lower disease risks and do not require heavy feeding, comfortably subsisting on kitchen vegetable waste. Following these are two specialized breeds dedicated entirely to commercial egg output.
Specialized Commercial Layers
The first specialized egg layer is White Leghorn, originally an Italian bird later genetically modified and developed in America exclusively for egg production. The second is Rhode Island Red, an American bird featuring light brown plumage and laying light brown eggs. White Leghorn stands out as an immensely popular breed for egg harvesting, starting production within 20 weeks of age. This specific breed consumes between 110 and 140 grams of feed daily while delivering an impressive 280 to 350 eggs during its laying cycle.
Commercial Viability and Feeding Habits
This remarkable chicken breed is raised across numerous states specifically for egg harvesting and proves highly beneficial for commercial poultry farms. Proper feed management allows farmers to maximize returns given the steady consumer demand for eggs across local markets. By selecting the appropriate breed based on farming goals, rural entrepreneurs can establish a sustainable and profitable poultry enterprise with minimal health risks and manageable feeding costs.
