Where Should Your Next Store Open? PhonePe Turns Its Payment Data Into Local Market Maps for Businesses

PhonePe has launched PulsePro, an enterprise intelligence platform that converts aggregated, anonymised payment data from its network of over 700 million users and 50 million merchants into hyperlocal market insights to help businesses decide where to expand and open stores.

For years, India's largest payment apps have quietly tracked where money changes hands, which shops stay busy and which neighbourhoods are opening their wallets faster than others. PhonePe is now turning that behavioural map into a commercial product. The company has rolled out PhonePe PulsePro, an enterprise intelligence platform that converts aggregated digital payment activity into street level market insights that businesses can actually act on.

Turning payment signals into business decisions

The core idea is simple. Instead of guessing where demand is building, a company can look at real spending behaviour to decide where to expand, how to plan distribution, which site to pick for a new outlet and which product categories are growing. PulsePro is aimed squarely at organisations that need quick, data backed calls rather than slow, instinct driven ones. It draws on aggregated and anonymised transaction patterns pulled from PhonePe's payments ecosystem, so no individual customer is identified anywhere in the process.

A network that reaches almost every pincode

The strength of the platform comes from the sheer scale of the data behind it. PulsePro sits on top of PhonePe's payments network, which counts more than 700 million registered users and over 50 million registered merchants. According to the company, that network touches 99% of India's postal codes. That reach is what lets PulsePro produce insights not just for big metros but for semi urban towns and rural markets that are usually invisible in conventional research.

Why neighbourhood level detail matters

For many businesses, the real value lies in small area intelligence. State wide or even city wide numbers are often too blunt for a consumer brand, a quick commerce operator, a lender or a retailer trying to fine tune its next move. What such companies actually want to know is far more specific: which postal codes are adopting digital payments fastest, where the density of merchants is climbing, and which categories are picking up momentum. Consumption now varies sharply from one locality to the next, sometimes within the same city, which makes this granular view increasingly important.

How it differs from the free PhonePe Pulse

PulsePro is built on the foundation of PhonePe Pulse, the open data platform the company launched in 2021. That earlier platform gives the public a free window into digital payment trends and has been widely used by entrepreneurs, researchers, policymakers, developers and students. PhonePe has confirmed that the open version will stay free. PulsePro, by contrast, is built for enterprise users who need something deeper and more customised. Where Pulse offers broad visibility into payment trends, PulsePro adds a business focused layer that can be plugged directly into operational planning and market prioritisation.

Karthik Raghupathy, Head of Strategy at PhonePe, said companies are asking for sharper intelligence rather than simply more raw numbers. He noted that demand for deeper market insight has grown steadily since 2021, adding, "PhonePe PulsePro is our response to that need."

Three ways businesses can use it

PulsePro is offered through three broad solutions. The first, Category and Growth Intelligence, helps firms study market trends, spending patterns, category performance and shifts in store formats. The company says this spans more than 200 store categories and over 100 market signals, giving brands a detailed read on how different segments are behaving.

The second, Retail Network Intelligence, is built for companies planning distribution and store networks, whether they are expanding in cities or into rural areas. It can flag high potential markets, highlight whitespace opportunities and help decide where stores, agents, warehouses or partners can be placed to the best effect.

The third, Hyperlocal Intelligence, zooms in even further, to the district and postal code level and below. It can also track digital ecosystem indicators such as quick commerce penetration at a hyperlocal level, giving businesses a sense of how fast newer shopping habits are spreading in a specific pocket.

A bigger shift in India's fintech

The launch says something about where India's digital economy is heading. Payment companies are no longer content with just moving money from one account to another. Large fintech platforms are increasingly mining anonymised behavioural signals to build entirely new products for businesses, institutions and merchants, turning the exhaust of everyday transactions into a revenue line of its own.

For the companies buying in, transaction led intelligence can cut the risk of walking into a weak market and help them deploy their capital more wisely. For PhonePe, the harder task will be proving that PulsePro's insights genuinely stand up when real business decisions ride on them, all while keeping user trust intact around privacy, anonymisation and responsible use of data.
