Ever since Vande Bharat trains began operating across the nation, they have garnered widespread appreciation from travellers. Particularly, experiencing the sleeper variants of Vande Bharat feels comparable to sitting inside an airplane. Although operational sleeper trains are currently limited in number, major cities across the country will soon witness these modern sleeper services running frequently. To facilitate this massive rollout, two prominent entities have joined forces to establish a joint venture dedicated to producing eighty Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets alongside managing their upkeep for decades.
Eighty Trainsets and Thirty-Five Years of Maintenance
Under the finalized arrangement, the joint venture between Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited and Titagarh Rail Systems Limited will manufacture a total of eighty Vande Bharat sleeper trains. Furthermore, this consortium will shoulder the complete maintenance responsibilities for these trains for a duration of thirty-five years, extending up to the year 2061. The formal agreement between both corporate partners was executed on the fifteenth of September, paving the way for the swift establishment of the dedicated new corporate entity to oversee operations.
A Project Valued at Twenty-Four Thousand Crores
The contract awarded to the BHEL and Titagarh consortium carries an estimated valuation of approximately twenty-four thousand crore rupees. This substantial financial outlay encompasses the manufacturing of eighty sleeper trainsets as well as their sustained maintenance spanning thirty-five years. The newly formed joint venture features an equal equity partnership between both companies. By entrusting both production and long-term upkeep to the same consortium, the railway administration ensures that operational continuity is maintained without prolonged structural concerns.
Contract Structure and Infrastructure Upgrades
This high-value contract is distributed across multiple distinct operational segments. Within the scope of this twenty-four thousand crore project, provisions have also been made to upgrade government manufacturing facilities and various trainset depots. The primary objective extends beyond mere manufacturing, aiming to provide comprehensive long-term support covering everything from train operations to underlying depot infrastructure, thereby guaranteeing robust performance standards over the entire lifecycle of the rolling stock.
Advantages of Integrated Manufacturing and Maintenance
One of the most critical aspects of this project is its integrated long-term maintenance framework. Traditionally, the fabrication of trainsets and their subsequent servicing were handled by separate entities, which occasionally resulted in fragmented quality control. Recognizing this limitation, both responsibilities have been consolidated under a single banner so that the manufacturing company maintains stringent quality standards from inception, knowing it remains accountable for servicing the assets over the long run.
Designed Specifically for Long-Distance Journeys
Vande Bharat sleeper trains are meticulously engineered to cater specifically to long-distance rail travel. Consequently, exceptional emphasis is placed on maintaining superior build quality, passenger comfort, modern aesthetic design, and advanced technological integration. The inaugural sleeper Vande Bharat service commenced operations earlier this year in January, and current targets aim to connect several major metropolitan corridors across the nation. Notably, the country's very first sleeper Vande Bharat train was constructed at the Integral Coach Factory located in Chennai.
