CBFC Restructured: Shashi Shekhar Vempati Leads New 18-Member Board Featuring Preity Zinta and Pankaj Tripathi

The central government has reorganized the Central Board of Film Certification, appointing former Prasar Bharati chief Shashi Shekhar Vempati to head a new 18-member panel that includes prominent industry names.

A major overhaul has taken place within the primary regulatory body for Indian cinema. The central government has officially reorganized the Central Board of Film Certification, placing former Prasar Bharati chief Shashi Shekhar Vempati at the helm of a newly formed eighteen-member committee. This fresh censor board panel comes into immediate effect and will remain operational for the next three years or until further orders are issued. The newly constituted panel brings together a diverse group of prominent faces and veterans from both mainstream Bollywood and various regional film industries across the country.

The updated censor board roster features an array of well-known personalities from the entertainment and artistic sectors. The newly appointed members include Preity Zinta, acclaimed actor Pankaj Tripathi, Suniel Shetty, Pallavi Joshi, prominent Bengali cinema star Prosenjit Chatterjee, popular television actress Rupali Ganguly, acclaimed director Priyadarshan, and three-time Grammy-winning composer Ricky Kej. Additionally, the committee welcomes national award-winning filmmaker Nila Madhab Panda, actor Manoj Joshi, Gujarati film producer Abhishek Jain, Telugu producer Supriya Yarlagadda, noted film critic Vinod Anupam, poet and writer Yatindra Mishra, Nishigandha Wad, and singer alongside former parliamentarian Hans Raj Hans.

An interesting highlight of this transition is that only two members from the previous censor board committee have been retained in the fresh lineup. Director Vaman Kendre and senior writer Ramesh Patange are the sole individuals carried over from the older team. Immediately following the official announcement of the new committee, the newly appointed chairman Shashi Shekhar Vempati took to the social media platform X to express his enthusiasm and welcome the incoming members.

This significant reorganization arrives shortly after the board convened a crucial high-level meeting following a gap of six years. Chaired by Shashi Shekhar Vempati, that extensive meeting focused on streamlining the film certification process and addressing several sensitive, pending matters related to the revising committee. The timing of this new panel is particularly noteworthy because, while standard board terms span three years, an official reorganization of the CBFC had not taken place for a prolonged period of nine years since 2017, making this fresh panel a long-overdue development.

For context, the Central Board of Film Certification serves as the premier apex organization in India responsible for examining films slated for theatrical and public screening and granting them appropriate exhibition certificates. Operating under the framework of the Cinematographic Act and its established guidelines, the board evaluates cinematic works to issue certifications under the U, U/A, or A categories.
