Rail authorities have rolled out an extensive transit plan to accommodate the massive influx of devotees heading to the renowned Naila Durgotsav in the Janjgir-Champa district of Chhattisgarh. To prevent overcrowding and ensure hassle-free travel during Navratri, dedicated special train services will run between Bilaspur and Champa from October 16 to October 20. The measure is designed to provide seamless connectivity for pilgrims travelling across regional corridors to visit the festival.
Schedule and Frequency for Bilaspur-Champa Operations
The festival service will complete three round trips every day to handle peak commuter flows efficiently. Departures from Bilaspur railway station have been scheduled for 4:00 PM, 7:00 PM, and 9:50 PM. On the return route, the train will leave Champa railway station at 5:20 PM, 8:25 PM, and 11:10 PM. This staggered timetable ensures that visitors attending evening darshan and cultural festivities have reliable transit options throughout the night.
Standby MEMU Rake Deployed at Janjgir-Naila Station
Beyond the scheduled runs, contingency measures have also been put into action on the ground. An additional MEMU rake is being placed on standby at Janjgir-Naila railway station, enabling station managers to dispatch an unscheduled train immediately if platform density surges unexpectedly. Given that Naila Durgotsav attracts visitors from all over Chhattisgarh and beyond, this supplementary capacity is expected to decongest regular long-distance trains and ease daily commuter bottlenecks.
Festive Travel Surge Across Long-Distance Networks
Navratri marks the start of an intense holiday window that continues through Dussehra, Karwa Chauth, Dhanteras, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, Bhai Dooj, and Chhath Puja. During this period, passenger numbers on railway lines and bus routes rise drastically as families travel home. Tickets on popular routes are routinely booked months in advance, prompting transport corporations and railway networks to arrange extra services so that people can reach their destinations in time for the festivities.
Heightened Vigilance Against Organised Transit Gangs
The heavy passenger rush during festival weeks often brings a spike in criminal activity across railway stations and transit hubs, leading enforcement agencies to issue advisories. In a recent incident in Ujjain, the RPF dismantled an organised gang targeting parcel shipments aboard trains. Members of this syndicate operated disguised in railway maintenance uniforms, using electric cutters to pierce the outer shells of carriages before removing valuable consignments and leaping off between stations. Railway Protection Force personnel have apprehended three members of the gang, while the search for two other absconding accomplices continues.
