Veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar is set to take charge on the international stage once again after being appointed captain of the 7-member Indian squad for the upcoming Hong Kong Sixes 2026 tournament. The three-day competition is scheduled to run from October 30 to November 1. The selection brings together several prominent Indian Premier League performers, including all-rounder Krunal Pandya and dynamic batter Nitish Rana, to compete in the fast-paced format.
Twelve Nations Competing with India Drawn Alongside Pakistan
A total of 12 national sides will compete for the title this season. Under the tournament bracket, India has been placed in Group C, setting up high-profile clashes against traditional rivals Pakistan as well as the United Arab Emirates. All fixtures throughout the event will take place at the Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground, where the experienced seam bowler will look to marshal his squad toward a tournament victory.
Captaincy Opportunity Following Strong League Performances
This tournament marks a significant milestone for Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who has remained away from the national setup for an extended stretch. His most recent outing for India came back in November 2022 during a T20 International against New Zealand. Despite remaining sidelined from international cricket, he enjoyed a stellar run during the 2026 IPL season, finishing as the competition's second-highest wicket-taker. That standout campaign triggered calls for his recall into India's white-ball teams, though an international spot eluded him. In the Hong Kong tournament, he will be accompanied by his Royal Challengers Bengaluru teammate Krunal Pandya. The seven-man lineup is completed by Nitish Rana, power-hitter Shashank Singh, left-arm pacer T. Natarajan, top-order batter Rahul Tripathi, and versatile finisher Rahul Tewatia.
Unique Six-A-Side Format and Ending the Decades-Long Title Drought
The structure of the Hong Kong Sixes offers a distinctive cricketing spectacle, fielding six players per side with each innings lasting just six overs. India has managed to capture the championship only once in tournament history, lifting the trophy back in 2005. Following the competition's revival in 2024, the Indian side struggled considerably, suffering early eliminations in the group stage in both subsequent editions and dropping 9 out of 10 matches across those two years. The newly appointed captain will aim to turn those fortunes around and end India's long wait for silverware at the venue.
