Coaching Staff React, Suryavanshi's Debut Still Awaited
There had been continuous speculation ahead of the match about whether Vaibhav Suryavanshi would make his debut. India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate told reporters before the match that Suryavanshi is fully ready to play international cricket, with no doubt about that. Asked how far Suryavanshi was from his international debut, he said that at the same time, he did not think dropping Sanju Samson could even be considered, calling him the player who played a key role in India winning the World Cup three months earlier and who had also had an excellent IPL.
The match carried extra significance for captain Shreyas Iyer, who was looking to register his first T20 win as captain. He had made his captaincy debut in a T20I series on the Ireland tour, where India suffered a 0-2 series defeat.
