A diplomatic conflict has erupted between Tehran and Doha six months after a high-stakes aerial operation during the opening days of the US-Iran war. Iran has demanded the immediate release of three fighter pilots whom it claims were captured by Qatari forces after their jets were downed on 2 March 2026. However, Qatar has categorically denied holding any Iranian personnel, describing Tehran's statements as misleading and inaccurate.
The 2 March 2026 Operation and Downed Su-24 Jets
According to Iranian military statements, the incident occurred on the third day of the US-Iran conflict when two Su-24 fighter jets conducted a combat mission targeting a Qatari military installation. Qatari air defense systems intercepted the incoming aircraft, hitting both jets during the mission and forcing the crew members to eject over Qatari territory.
Iran contends that three of the aviators survived the ejection and were subsequently taken into custody by Qatari authorities. The pilots have been identified as Javad Salehi, Abdul Majid Dashtian, and Imran Behroshian. A fourth aviator, Majid Kazemi, was killed during the engagement, and his remains were later returned to Iranian officials. Tehran maintains that the three surviving airmen have been held in captivity for six months without communication or visitation rights.
Appeal to the ICRC and Human Rights Allegations
In a formal letter sent to Mirjana Spoljaric, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Iranian Brig Gen Mohammad Bagherzadeh requested urgent intervention by the humanitarian body. The letter, which was released through Iranian media outlets, accused Qatari authorities of failing to grant the three captured pilots their basic rights under international humanitarian conventions and regulations.
Brig Gen Mohammad Bagherzadeh asserted that the held aviators have been completely isolated and denied any opportunity to contact or meet their families. The communication urged ICRC chief Mirjana Spoljaric to hold Qatari authorities accountable for fulfilling international legal obligations governing captured military personnel and to assist in securing their safe repatriation to Iran.
Qatar Rejects Claims and Outlines Search Efforts
Qatar responded to the accusations with an explicit denial, expressing surprise at the claims put forward by Tehran. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Mohammed Al Ansari issued an official response on X, stating that Qatari military forces made attempts to establish contact with the incoming aircraft after they breached Qatari airspace, but received no response from the flight crews.
Spokesperson Majed Mohammed Al Ansari emphasized that Qatari armed forces implemented all necessary defensive procedures in strict accordance with international law to protect national territory. He explained that Qatari search and rescue units thoroughly searched the crash area to recover flight crew remains. Qatar notified Iranian authorities to coordinate the handover of the single set of human remains recovered from the scene, belonging to Majid Kazemi, and invited Iranian officials to inspect the full documentation of the search operation. Qatar noted that Tehran has yet to accept the invitation to review the search details.
