A major road accident took place in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, coinciding with Diwali. A bus crashed into the police escort vehicle guarding Bharatiya Janata Party leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, Sunil Kumar Sharma, along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway near Peeda. The impact of the collision was severe enough to flip the police vehicle over onto the road. The mishap left four police personnel, including a Station House Officer, injured, though Sunil Kumar Sharma and everyone else accompanying him remained completely safe.
Sequence of Events and Police Deployment
According to officials, Sunil Kumar Sharma was traveling from Srinagar toward Jammu. When his convoy reached the jurisdiction of the Chandrakot police station area, a police team led by SHO Inspector Vikky Thapa joined his security detail as an escort. During the journey, as the convoy neared a crossing on the highway, a bus rammed directly into the police vehicle. The collision caused the vehicle to overturn, resulting in injuries to the four police officers seated inside.
CCTV Footage and Rescue Efforts
CCTV footage documenting the incident has also surfaced, capturing the exact moment the bus strikes the police escort vehicle and causes it to flip. Witnessing the crash, Sunil Kumar Sharma immediately ordered his convoy to halt and personally participated in the rescue and relief operations at the site. He noted that while the police vehicle suffered extensive damage, all the security personnel aboard managed to escape major harm.
Medical Treatment of the Injured Personnel
The four injured officers were rushed to the Ramban District Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. This group included Chandrakot SHO Inspector Vikky Thapa. The Medical Superintendent of the district hospital, Dr. Mohammed Rafi Wani, stated that the condition of all four injured officers was stable. Following initial medical care and necessary diagnostic scans, every injured personnel was discharged from the hospital.

Reflecting on the incident, Sunil Kumar Sharma emphasized the importance of road safety. He pointed out that vehicles travel at high speeds along the national highway, making it crucial to exercise caution near crossings to prevent such mishaps. He urged all drivers navigating highway intersections to maintain extreme vigilance and care.
