A tragic incident of domestic violence in Alathur, Kerala, has claimed the life of a 65-year-old man who stepped in to shield his young granddaughter from a violent assault. Sulaiman, aged 65, suffered multiple stab wounds when he intervened to stop his 16-year-old grandson from attacking his 10-year-old sister with a knife. After battling for his life in a critical care facility, the elderly man succumbed to his severe injuries on Friday night.
Dispute at Kawassery Residence Escalates Into Violence
The incident occurred on October 19 inside the family residence at Kawassery, situated near Alathur. Sulaiman was a resident of the Vazhakkachira locality. According to investigators, an argument broke out between the 16-year-old boy and his 10-year-old sister over an ordinary household matter. As the quarrel rapidly intensified, the teenager lost control and moved toward his younger sister armed with a sharp knife to attack her.
Elderly Man Sustains Fatal Wounds While Protecting Granddaughter
Noticing the escalating danger to the young girl, Sulaiman rushed forward to intervene, defuse the altercation, and physically protect the child. In a sudden burst of rage, the adolescent turned the weapon directly upon the grandfather. Sulaiman sustained deep lacerations across his neck, chest, and stomach. The 10-year-old girl was also injured during the struggle. Family members and neighbors quickly rushed both injured individuals to a private hospital in Alathur for immediate emergency medical care.
Deteriorating Health and Death at Thrissur Medical College Hospital
Given the critical nature of the deep puncture wounds on Sulaiman's torso, physicians at the local private facility advised an immediate transfer to the Thrissur Medical College Hospital for advanced surgical intervention. Despite continuous monitoring and intensive treatment by doctors over several days, Sulaiman passed away late Friday night. Law enforcement officials officially confirmed the death on Saturday. The 10-year-old granddaughter responded positively to treatment and is reported to be completely out of danger.
Accused Apprehended by Alathur Police, Murder Charge Added
Following the violent attack on October 19, the teenager had fled the residence in an attempt to evade capture. Alathur police launched a search operation and apprehended the minor shortly afterward. Due to his legal status as a juvenile, authorities placed him under custody and transferred him to a juvenile observation home in accordance with the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act. While the case was initially registered under attempt to murder charges, investigators are now altering the formal charges to include murder following the grandfather's demise, while continuing their probe into the specific triggers behind the domestic altercation.
