A tragic incident has come to light in the Raichur district of Karnataka, where the body of a 22-year-old Dalit woman was recovered from a well under suspicious circumstances. Following a formal complaint by the victim's family alleging sexual assault and murder, local law enforcement authorities have taken three individuals into custody and placed them under judicial remand, while an active hunt is underway for a fourth suspect. The Sirwar police station has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the crime.
Disappearance and Discovery in Hokrani Village
The incident unfolded in Hokrani village, situated within the Sirwar taluk. According to details shared by the victim's family, the young woman had left her residence on Wednesday evening for open defecation. Concerns arose when she failed to return home after a considerable duration, prompting her relatives to launch a search across the locality. After an unsuccessful overnight search, family members discovered her body lying on the steps of a village well on Thursday morning. The family immediately alerted the Sirwar police, who arrived at the scene to recover the body and secure the location for forensic analysis.
Criminal Complaint and Allegations of Assault
Based on the official statement provided by the deceased woman's father, the perpetrators subjected the victim to sexual assault before taking her life and dumping her body near the well. Following the father's detailed complaint, the police formally registered a case against four individuals. The named suspects have been identified as 22-year-old Gundy, 22-year-old Mahantesh, 23-year-old Veeresh, and 45-year-old Mundaragi Basavaraj.
Police Actions and Legal Proceedings
Providing an update on the law enforcement action, Circle Police Inspector M. Shashikant confirmed that three of the four named accused have been apprehended. Following their initial detention, a local magistrate ordered all three suspects into judicial custody. Inspector Shashikant noted that dedicated police teams are currently conducting raids to locate and arrest the fourth suspect, Mundaragi Basavaraj, who remains absconding.
Broader Crime Context in Karnataka
The Raichur case follows a series of grave criminal incidents reported across Karnataka in recent weeks. In July, the state was shaken by the murder of 45-year-old Dr. Kiran Honnavar, an anesthesiologist associated with Chirayu Hospital, who was killed inside his apartment in Dharwad. During that assault, the doctor's 8-year-old son sustained knife wounds and required immediate treatment at a private hospital. Dharwad police subsequently detained the victim's wife, Dr. Priyanka, an ophthalmologist, for questioning regarding the murder mystery. In a separate legal case in the state, authorities arrested a woman facing charges for attempting to perform black magic on a judge's chair.
