In a major anti-corruption crackdown, the vigilance department team conducted a successful operation in Narkatiaganj, located within the Bettiah district of Bihar, arresting Assistant Sub-Inspector Upendra Vidyarthi of Shikarpur police station red-handed while taking a bribe of four thousand rupees. The arrest took place near the local High School Chowk, sending shockwaves through the police department.
According to details shared by officials, a local resident named Amrit Kumar, living in Hardi Teda, approached the vigilance department with a formal complaint. A power-related case bearing number 79426 had been registered at Shikarpur police station against Amrit Kumar's father, Ramsagar Sahni. To secure relief and assistance in this ongoing matter, ASI Upendra Vidyarthi was allegedly extorting money from the family. Unwilling to pay the illegal demand, Amrit chose to report the matter to the authorities instead.
Pre-Planned Trap at High School Chowk
Upon receiving the complaint, the vigilance department initiated a formal verification process. Once the preliminary inquiry confirmed that the police officer was indeed demanding bribes, a case under vigilance station crime number 10126 was officially registered. A specialized raiding team was subsequently formed under the supervision of Vigilance DSP Satish Madhav, which included Inspector Asmit Kumar and other supporting personnel.
On Monday, as per the arranged plan, Amrit Kumar informed the vigilance team about handing over the cash installment. The tactical team laid a discreet trap around High School Chowk. The moment the accused ASI accepted the currency notes from Amrit, the team pounced and apprehended him on the spot. Investigators also gathered indications that the same officer had previously extracted money from the complainant prior to this trap.
Departmental Panic and Next Steps
The high-profile arrest created immediate panic among local police personnel. The vigilance team swiftly transported the detained officer to their facility to carry out subsequent legal procedures. DSP Satish Madhav briefed the media regarding the specifics of the operation, underlining that strict actions against corruption will continue without exceptions.
