A deeply shocking and shameful incident has surfaced from the East Bardhaman district of West Bengal, triggering widespread tension and anger across the locality. A homemaker who had stepped out to wash utensils by a riverbank was allegedly subjected to obscene gestures and an attempted sexual assault. When the victim fiercely opposed these advances, the perpetrator brutally pushed her underwater in the river, causing her death. The unfolding of this brutal crime has left the entire neighborhood in a state of shock and grief.
Accused Sent to 14 Days of Judicial Custody
The deceased woman has been identified as 37-year-old Tapasi Samanta. In connection with the gruesome incident, local law enforcement swiftly apprehended the accused youth, identified as Vasudev Manna. On Friday, he was produced before the Kalna Court in East Bardhaman, where the presiding magistrate ordered him to be sent to judicial custody for 14 days. The police are continuing their thorough investigation into the matter.
Accused Had Come to Attend a Local Ritual
According to available details, the incident took place on Thursday evening when Tapasi Samanta had gone to the banks of the Khadi river to clean utensils. At the same time, Vasudev Manna had arrived in the local area to visit a relative's house on the occasion of Mansa Puja. It is alleged that taking advantage of the surroundings, the accused harassed her and attempted to force himself upon her.
Crime Exposed Through a Child Witness
When the homemaker strongly protested against the assault, the accused reportedly plunged her into the waters of the Khadi river, leading to her tragic demise. Fortunately, a minor child present near the spot witnessed the entire sequence of events. The child immediately rushed back to inform his family members. Promptly arriving at the scene, locals managed to catch the accused and hand him over to the authorities. The Nadanghat police station personnel took him into custody and initiated formal proceedings.
Similar Tragedies Reported Earlier in the District
Incidents of grave violence against women have previously been reported from East Bardhaman district. Earlier, the body of a tribal woman was recovered from a field near the Talith Canalpar area under the jurisdiction of the Dewandighi police station. At that time, the victim's brother had alleged before the media that his sister was first subjected to rape and subsequently murdered.
