Delhi PG Collapse: Two Motilal Nehru College Professors Stepped Up to Help Students

Following the collapse of a PG building in Delhi's Satya Niketan, two professors from Motilal Nehru College have arranged food, accommodation, and counseling for affected students within the college premises.

Following the sudden collapse of a student-filled PG building in Delhi's Satya Niketan on Sunday, grieving families who lost their loved ones continue to arrive in the national capital. Amidst this tragic incident, two professors from Motilal Nehru College have set a remarkable example of humanity. Both teachers have been relentlessly involved in relief efforts and student welfare since Sunday. For the first two days, spanning Sunday and Monday, the duo went without food or water, constantly praying for the safety of all their students. They reached out to individual students by calling them to check on their well-being and ensure their safety.

Status of the Three Motilal Nehru College Students

Out of the students residing in the collapsed PG, three belonged to Motilal Nehru College. Among them, one student is currently in critical condition, while another had gone shopping in Sarojini Nagar and was thus completely safe. The third student has already been discharged from the hospital. Displaying immense compassion, both professors, with the full cooperation of the college principal, have arranged proper accommodation, food, and drinking facilities inside the Motilal Nehru College campus itself. Furthermore, professional counseling is being provided to the students as they remain in a state of severe shock following the accident.

Professors Pradeep and Kanha Ram Meena at the Forefront

The professors who demonstrated exemplary human values are identified as Professor Pradeep and Professor Kanha Ram Meena. Both educators rushed to the accident site on the very day the building collapsed. When they called their three students residing in that building, they learned that one had been rescued and admitted to a hospital, another was safe because he was away at the Sarojini Nagar market, and the third remained hospitalized in critical condition. They noted that students living in the surrounding area are gripped by extreme fear and panic. Regular counseling sessions are being conducted to help them cope with the trauma. They also pointed out that most PG buildings in this locality have become dilapidated, urging the administration to take immediate notice.

Arranging Shelter Within the College Premises

Professor Pradeep shared that he had been present at the incident site since the very first day. He also provided extensive information during the site inspection alongside Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. He emphasized that a vast number of students reside in this neighborhood, and a comprehensive verification of all residential buildings must be conducted to assess the living conditions of the structures where students stay.

Currently, for the students of Motilal Nehru College who are traumatized or were previously staying in various dilapidated hostels, temporary living and dining arrangements have been set up right inside the college. The faculty members maintain continuous communication with the students. Constant updates are being tracked for the student currently in critical condition, while regular touch is maintained with the discharged student and the one who survived by visiting Sarojini Nagar. The professors are personally ensuring that none of their students have to live under an atmosphere of terror and insecurity.

Following the Satya Niketan tragedy, providing campus shelter and counseling by Prof. Pradeep and Prof. Kanha Ram Meena highlights immediate grassroots support. However, this incident underscores the severe crisis of illegal and dilapidated PG accommodations in student-heavy localities of Delhi. Authorities must urgently conduct comprehensive structural safety audits to prevent such recurring disasters.

This tragic incident in Satya Niketan has exposed severe safety loopholes prevalent in student accommodations. While the humanitarian gesture by the professors is commendable during this crisis, mounting legal pressure now rests on local administration and municipal authorities to initiate strict, swift action against unauthorized and dilapidated PG premises to ensure student safety.
