The Delhi government has stepped up its administrative machinery ahead of the festive season, rolling out a comprehensive plan to ensure round-the-clock sanitation across the national capital. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced that intensive cleaning operations will now be conducted through the entire night, spanning locations from arterial roads all the way to the banks of the Yamuna River. With major festivals including Diwali approaching fast, the Chief Minister has adopted a zero-tolerance approach toward civic apathy, issuing clear directives to municipal authorities that any negligence in maintaining cleanliness will invite immediate punitive action.
High-Level Secretariat Meeting and Directives
Chairing a high-level review meeting at the Delhi Secretariat on Wednesday, the Chief Minister instructed officials to immediately launch night sanitation drives across residential colonies, major commercial hubs, and bustling market areas. She emphasized that the transformation in cleanliness must be visible on the ground across every corner of the capital well before the festivities peak, ensuring a pristine environment for residents and visitors alike.
Garbage Removal and Technological Surveillance
During the session, the Chief Minister ordered the immediate clearance of garbage dumps, construction debris, and accumulated filth scattered across roadways. She stressed that picking up trash is only half the battle, making timely garbage lifting equally critical to prevent refuse from piling up again. If necessary, additional sanitation personnel are to be deployed to meet the demands of the massive drive. Furthermore, Rekha Gupta directed senior officials to personally step out into the field, inspect ongoing sanitation work firsthand, and rectify shortcomings on the spot. She also underscored the importance of leveraging modern technology for effective monitoring and supervision.
Cabinet Warning and Civic Responsibility
Weighing in on the initiative, Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood remarked that sanitation is not merely a routine government project, but a fundamental responsibility tied to public welfare and the dignity of citizens. He issued a stern warning that strict departmental action would be initiated against anyone found showing laxity or dereliction of duty in maintaining cleanliness standards across the city.
Logistics of Night-Time Cleaning in Capital Markets
Night cleaning operations in Delhi go far beyond routine sweeping, serving as a strategic initiative by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the New Delhi Municipal Council to upgrade civic infrastructure, air quality, and public hygiene. With over 312 major commercial marketplaces such as Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazaar, Lajpat Nagar, Kamla Nagar, and Karol Bagh remaining heavily congested throughout daylight hours, conducting deep cleaning during the day is practically impossible. Once retail shops shut down for the night, sanitation workers move in to scrub and cleanse roads and pathways.
Overcoming Traffic Hurdles and Managing Major Events
Carrying out sanitation tasks during night hours helps circumvent the severe traffic congestion that routinely clogs Delhi roads during the day, allowing heavy garbage dumpers and loaders to navigate without hindrance. Additionally, Delhi frequently plays host to massive political protests and monumental festivals like Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath. For instance, following recent events such as the conclusion of protests at Jantar Mantar and Effigy burnings at Ramlila grounds, special overnight sanitation drives were executed by deploying extra workforces. This meticulous nocturnal effort ensures that traders and shoppers step out to entirely clean and hygienic surroundings every single morning.
