A major counterfeit drug operation involving fake anti-rabies vaccines has been uncovered in Delhi following an inspection by the Drugs Control Department. Officials raided an unlicensed pharmacy operating in the Mukherjee Nagar area on April 22, seizing multiple bottles of 'Abhayrab', one of the most widely prescribed anti-rabies vaccines in the country. Subsequent laboratory analysis of the seized samples at the Central Drug Laboratory in Kasauli confirmed that the vaccine failed all standard quality and safety tests. Authorities have arrested four individuals in connection with the illegal distribution of these spurious medical supplies.
Exploiting Authentic Batch Numbers for Counterfeit Packaging
Abhayrab is manufactured by Indian Immunologicals Limited, a prominent pharmaceutical producer. When authorities cross-referenced the seized bottles with the manufacturer, the company verified that the batch number printed on the packaging was indeed authentic and belonged to a lot that had passed rigorous clinical testing before market release. However, detailed laboratory examinations revealed that the labels and QR codes affixed to the seized bottles were complete fabrications. Fraudsters had maliciously replicated legitimate packaging details to pass off spurious formulations under the guise of an authentic pharmaceutical batch.
DCGI Issues Nationwide Alert Across State Regulatory Bodies
Recognizing the severe public health threat posed by fake vaccines, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) issued a nationwide advisory to drug control agencies across all states and Union Territories. Regulators have been instructed to maintain strict vigilance over the market, ensuring that the distribution, sale, and stock of this specific Abhayrab batch are closely monitored and halted where necessary. Investigators are currently working to determine the full scope of the supply chain, identifying where these counterfeit units were delivered and determining how many patients may have received the ineffective doses over recent months.
Severe Health Risks and Fatal Consequences of Ineffective Immunization
Medical experts emphasize that vaccination is the only definitive protection against rabies, a viral disease that carries a near hundred percent fatality rate once clinical symptoms manifest. If an individual bitten by an infected animal receives a counterfeit vaccine, their immune system fails to produce the necessary protective antibodies. Consequently, the rabies virus remains unneutralized and progresses through the central nervous system, leading inevitably to a fatal outcome. Health professionals have called for stringent punitive action against all entities involved in manufacturing and distributing fake life-saving medications to safeguard public safety.
