A massive surge of shoppers heading out for Diwali preparations brought vehicular movement to a crawl across Delhi and the wider National Capital Region on Wednesday evening. The heavy influx of shoppers onto commercial avenues and arterial links triggered extensive gridlock, leaving daily commuters and visitors stranded in lingering lines of traffic. Prominent corridors around India Gate Road, Jia Sarai, Teen Murti Marg, Moti Bagh, and Safdarjung witnessed severe bottlenecks as vehicles moved at an agonizingly slow pace as the evening progressed.
The festive shopping rush heavily burdened the Ring Road, where traffic moved sluggishly throughout peak hours. Substantial congestion was also recorded across Delhi, Noida, and multiple connecting routes across the NCR, forcing commuters to endure long delays inside their vehicles.
Wholesale Hubs and Commercial Streets Face Severe Congestion
Thoroughfares heading toward major retail and wholesale destinations like Sadar Bazar and Karol Bagh were among the worst affected by the evening chaos. Movement ground to a near halt on the approach toward Qutub Road Chowk in Sadar Bazar. People in the area pointed out that multiple vehicles had been parked illegally along the sidewalks, drastically narrowing the drivable carriageway. They also noted a distinct absence of towing cranes required to promptly clear these unauthorized vehicles and remove roadway encroachments.
Similar complaints emerged from Ajmal Khan Road, where pedestrians and motorists highlighted that haphazard roadside parking has turned into a routine nuisance that lacks systematic enforcement. The festive shopping crowd drastically magnified the strain on these already burdened market roads, resulting in long vehicle backups and glacial movement through key intersections.
Central and Northern Corridors Suffer Extended Signal Stops
Commuting conditions deteriorated across central and northern sectors of Delhi as well. Near Inderlok, vehicles were caught in a complete standstill at a traffic signal, remaining stationary in the exact same spot for roughly half an hour. Long delays were similarly reported along Teen Murti Marg and Kushak Road, where travelers remained held up in queues for nearly 20 minutes. The arterial stretch connecting 11 Murti toward Dhaula Kuan experienced another intense choke point, slowing transit considerably.
Festival Melas and Bottlenecks Create Further Delays
Traffic reached a standstill on the link leading from Talkatora Road toward Shankar Road, prompting stranded drivers to seek assistance from traffic police personnel on the ground. Near the Blind School, which was hosting an ongoing Diwali Mela, the sudden surge of visitors caused vehicles to crawl, quickly generating long vehicular tails across adjoining avenues.
Near Modi Mill in the vicinity of Kalkaji, commuters reported that over 200 vehicles were stuck in place for more than 30 minutes. Regular travelers along this route remarked that chronic delays have become an everyday feature here, particularly during peak commuting periods. Noticeable traffic hold-ups with long vehicle queues were also witnessed across key roads in Dwarka and East of Kailash.
