An unidentified man was beaten to death with sticks and rods in East Delhi's Mayur Vihar Phase-3 on Friday morning, sending a wave of alarm through the neighbourhood. As soon as the body was found, a police team from the New Ashok Nagar police station reached the spot and began investigating.
Attack took place in the early morning hours
According to police, the incident happened around 5 am. The man was repeatedly struck with sticks and rods, and he died at the scene. It has not yet been established who attacked him or what triggered the assault. Police are examining every angle of the case.
Victim's identity yet to be established
Police have not been able to confirm the victim's age, identity or family background so far. Investigators are scanning CCTV footage from the surrounding area in an effort to identify both the attackers and the deceased. Local residents are also being questioned to piece together what happened.
Mayur Vihar Phase-3 has seen violent incidents before
This is not the first time Mayur Vihar Phase-3 has made headlines over violence. On 13 July, half a dozen men had entered a colony in the same area and vandalised property and assaulted residents after being stopped from harassing someone, leaving around 15 people, including women and children, affected, with two of them left in a critical condition. Separately, on 3 February, a delivery boy was stabbed to death in the same locality.
Similar attacks recently reported in Nangloi and Trilokpuri
Such violent incidents have kept surfacing across Delhi in recent times. A 15-year-old student on his way to school in Nangloi was recently attacked with a knife by 5-6 boys and died from his injuries. It emerged that the student had tried to stop the boys from harassing a girl, after which he was attacked. Before that, in Trilokpuri, a minor student was beaten to death over an old rivalry, and six minors were arrested in that case.
