A speeding Mercedes car slammed into a scooter near the Jahangirpuri bus stand in Delhi on July 5, killing the rider on the spot. The victim has been identified as Deepak Kumar, a resident of Delhi's Mangolpuri area. The car's driver fled the scene right after the crash, but police traced the vehicle's number through a PCR call and tracked down the accused within a short time.
Speeding car struck scooter under a foot overbridge on Outer Ring Road
According to police, Deepak Kumar was riding his scooter towards Kashmiri Gate after finishing work for the day. As he reached the stretch under a foot overbridge on the Outer Ring Road, a Mercedes car travelling at high speed came from behind and rammed directly into his scooter. The impact was so severe that Deepak suffered fatal injuries and died right there on the road. Moments after the collision, the driver sped away with the car instead of stopping to help, disappearing from the spot.
A cab driver's tip led police straight to the accused
A cab driver who was present at the spot alerted the police about the accident and also passed on the registration number of the fleeing Mercedes. Acting on that lead, police chased down the vehicle and apprehended the driver within a short while. Investigation revealed that the car was being driven at the time of the crash by a man named Ansh Pratap Singh. He was taken into custody immediately once identified.
Case registered at Jahangirpuri police station, probe continues
Police arrested the accused, Ansh Pratap Singh, and registered a case against him at the Jahangirpuri police station under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the BNS. Section 281 of the BNS deals with rash or negligent driving on a public road, while Section 106(1) is invoked when such negligence results in death. Investigators are now working to establish how fast the car was travelling at the time and why the driver was so reckless. Police say further investigation into the case is underway.
