A tragic accident unfolded in the Tikri Kalan area of New Delhi on Wednesday afternoon when a violent explosion occurred at a CNG refueling station, claiming the lives of two workers and leaving several others injured. The incident took place during routine operations at the pump while a commercial truck was being refueled with compressed natural gas. The impact of the blast was so intense that the loud detonation echoed throughout the surrounding neighborhood, triggering widespread panic among residents and bystanders. Emergency teams from the local police and the Delhi Fire Service responded swiftly to the site to launch rescue efforts. Authorities confirmed that two employees died on the spot due to the blast, while the injured were promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical care.
Casualties and Condition of the Injured
The two individuals who lost their lives in the tragic event were regular employees stationed at the CNG refueling facility. Officials identified the deceased as 25-year-old Manish, a resident of Baba Haridas Colony, and 32-year-old Sunny, who hailed from the Nijampur locality. At the precise moment of the explosion, both workers were positioned immediately adjacent to the truck, actively overseeing the gas filling procedure. The sudden force of the blast gave neither worker any opportunity to react or seek shelter, resulting in immediate fatal injuries at the scene.
In addition to the fatalities, multiple people present at the fuel station sustained varying degrees of injuries. According to preliminary reports, one of the injured individuals remains in critical condition. Local bystanders who witnessed the explosion acted promptly to assist emergency responders in transporting all the injured victims to the nearest medical center, where doctors are continuing to administer specialized treatment.
Explosion During Refueling and Avoided Disaster
Eyewitness accounts and initial operational details indicate that work at the station was progressing as usual on Wednesday. The situation escalated when a truck pulled into the bay to get refueled. Almost immediately after the gas filling process commenced, a sudden and powerful blast ripped through the equipment. The concussive wave knocked down several people standing nearby and created immediate chaos across the premises, with panic-stricken individuals fleeing in search of safety.
Technical experts suspect that abnormally high gas pressure during the refueling cycle or a sudden mechanical flaw in the dispensing mechanism could have triggered the blast. Investigating officers are also examining whether an undetected gas leak contributed to the structural failure of the valve or hose. Despite the severity of the explosion, a major secondary disaster was averted as no fire broke out at the refueling station following the blast. Fire officials noted that had the leaking gas caught fire, the resulting blaze could have caused catastrophic damage to the surrounding infrastructure and significantly higher casualties.
Emergency Response and Ongoing Investigation
The Delhi Fire Service was alerted to the crisis at approximately 3:37 PM. Upon receiving the emergency call, multiple fire engines were immediately dispatched to the Tikri Kalan location. On arrival, firefighters prioritized casualty evacuation and secured the immediate perimeter. To eliminate any remaining hazards and prevent further pressurized gas leaks, responders acted quickly to completely shut off the main gas supply valve servicing the entire refueling plant.
Police personnel have cordoned off the entire blast site to preserve evidence and maintain security. A specialized forensic and technical inspection team is currently carrying out a detailed examination of the station equipment and truck fittings to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Law enforcement officials have launched a comprehensive investigation to ascertain whether technical failure or safety non-compliance led to the fatal incident.
