The school building, constructed during the era of royal dynasties, continues to serve local children with sturdy walls and century-old wooden doors that have resisted the test of time without structural complaints.
The Royal Legacy of King Mohan Singh and Bundelkhand
The origins of this historic primary school are intertwined with the royal lineage of Bundelkhand Kesari Maharaja Chhatrasal, who founded the town of Chhatarpur in Madhya Pradesh. The school and the surrounding Srinagar Fort were both constructed under the direction of King Mohan Singh, who was the eighth adopted son of Maharaja Chhatrasal. When the institution opened its doors in 1901, the region operated under royal governance. Following India's independence and the subsequent reorganization of state territories, new borders were drawn, placing the Srinagar Fort area within the administrative jurisdiction of Mahoba district in Uttar Pradesh. However, the boundary of Chhatarpur district in Madhya Pradesh lies just a short distance away from the hill.
Architectural Durability and Recent Campus Expansions
Despite being built over 120 years ago, the original structure commissioned by King Mohan Singh remains in active use. The school retains its authentic 100-year-old wooden doors, which remain fully operational. Over the decades, the historic building has maintained strong structural integrity without encountering any complaints or safety hazards. To accommodate growing student needs, local authorities constructed new additional classrooms adjacent to the heritage structure a few years ago. Today, academic sessions and daily learning activities are conducted smoothly across both the historic and newly added classroom spaces.
Overcoming Hilltop Challenges to Build a Green Learning Hub
Managing a school situated on a steep hill presented unique operational hurdles over the years. When Priyanka Tiwari assumed her duties as Principal 15 years ago, the campus environment faced severe neglected conditions. Due to its isolated elevation on the hilltop, the area lacked greenery and frequently attracted anti-social elements who created unsanitary surroundings. Recognizing the need for a safe educational environment, Principal Priyanka Tiwari initiated a targeted restoration effort. Under her guidance, the school team cleared the grounds, planted numerous trees across the campus, and built a dedicated children's play garden right on top of the hill. As a direct result of these long-term greening and security efforts, children now attend classes regularly, and structured academic routines take place uninterrupted every day.
