A lecturer at a government school in Rajasthan's Jalore district has set a rare example of putting her own money into public education, contributing 3 lakh 70 thousand rupees from her personal earnings toward the school's development. Priyanka Sharma, who teaches at the PM Shri Rajkiya Uchch Madhyamik Vidyalaya, did not limit her role to the classroom. She chose to fund infrastructure upgrades for the school out of her own pocket, and the gesture has drawn praise from officials, educationists and the local community alike. Government schools are often criticised for lacking basic resources, but this contribution shows what becomes possible when a teacher chooses to go beyond the call of duty and treat the school as her own responsibility.
A cheque for 3.70 lakh rupees, and a plan for the money
At a function held at the school, Priyanka Sharma formally handed over a cheque worth 3.70 lakh rupees to the school administration. The event was attended by Jogeshwar Garg, Chief Whip of the Rajasthan government, Additional District Education Officer Lahariram Mali, and Block Education Officer Mamta Agarwal. School principal Bhanwar Makwana said the entire amount would be used across several development works at the school, including strengthening basic facilities, creating a better teaching and learning environment for students, and arranging other resources the school needs. According to the principal, the funds are expected to visibly change the school's condition over time.
Officials call it a model for community participation
Speaking at the event, Jogeshwar Garg said Priyanka Sharma's contribution was an outstanding example of social participation in education. He said that when a teacher steps forward on her own to support a school's development, it motivates the wider community and helps raise the overall standard of education. Educationists and public representatives present at the function also praised the initiative. Among those in attendance were ACBEO Jabar Singh Deora, Basant Ojha, Dr Ramesh Khorwal, Bhu-Nirikshak Varun Sharma and Jai Prakash Pania, along with several other dignitaries. They described it as a positive step and said others should draw inspiration from it and come forward to support schools at their own level.
A message that goes beyond one school
The initiative carries a larger message: government schools cannot improve through official effort alone, and their overall development depends on participation from every section of society. At a time when multiple government schemes are already being run to improve education, individual contributions like this one add extra strength to those efforts rather than competing with them. Priyanka Sharma's decision to fund her school's development from her own earnings could become an example not just for Jalore, but for the whole of Rajasthan, showing that a single responsible step at a personal level can still bring about meaningful change.
